Snowstorm Blankets Westport, Causes Some Flooding

Westport missed the heaviest snowfall amounts as an intense winter storm blanketed the Northeast today. Some shoreline roads were flooded as the area saw periods of near blizzard conditions.

Unofficial measurement of Westport snowfall amounts ranged from 16 to 19 inches. New York City measured a record snowfall of 26.9 inches in Central Park, the highest tally since records started being kept in 1869.

Westport’s Public Works Department deployed all its 17 vehicles and called in private contractors to help clear its 123 miles of roadways as well as parking lots at schools and train stations.

“We came through it relatively unscathed,” said Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff, who toured the town in the fire command vehicle and later spent several hours on a Westport snowplow.
