Firefighters Respond to Oil Spill on the Saugatuck
Westport firefighters responded to an oil spill on the Saugatuck River after a boat sunk off a private dock on Manitou Court Wednesday afternoon.
Firefighters responded to a call just after 2 p.m. and found a 1950, 30-foot, wooden-hull Chris-Craft, owned by a Norwalk resident, sunken in the water and an oily sheen on the surface.
The boat sank apparently when the on-board pump lost power, according to a fire department press release.
The owner claimed the boat had a minimal amount of gasoline in preparation for hauling the boat out for the winter season, the release said.
Santa Arrives in Westport
Santa Claus arrived on Main Street this evening to greet children and ask them their Christmas wishes as part of the annual tree lighting. As always, he arrived in a Westport police cruiser. The Harbor Blues singers from Greens Farms Academy were also on hand to sing holiday tunes for the crowd. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Larry Untermeyer for WestportNow.com

First Ceremonial Duty
Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff, in his first ceremonial function as the town’s new leader, addressed tonight’s tree lighting ceremony on Main Street. He said he remembered Main Street as a youngster growing up here and that while the street has changed over the years, the people of Westport helped it maintain its small town feeling.
