Shays Wins Most Suburbs to Counter Farrell Victories in Cities

Incumbent Republican Rep. Christopher Shays carried all but one of the 4th Congressional District Fairfield County suburban towns tonight—Westport the exception—to counter opponent Diane Farrell’s strength in the cities to win a 10th term in Congress.shaysvictory11020402260.jpg

His defeat of the Westport Democratic First Selectwoman came despite her ads portraying him as a strong supporter of President Bush, who was soundly defeated by Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry in the state.

A final tally by The Associated Press Wednesday gave Shays 149,891 votes and Farrell 136,481, or 52 per cent to 48 percent.

Shays, whose final ads denounced Farrell for negative campaigning, told a loud crowd at the Norwalk Inn that he has seen eight years of anger and hate—first against President Clinton then against President Bush.

And he promised, “I’m going to work overtime to help this country to come to grips with the fact it can’t be about anger, and it has to be about what is best for our country.”
