Keeping Power Line Underground May Cost $250 Million

A planned power line upgrade that runs through Westport can be buried underground, but Connecticut residents may be stuck paying at least $250 million extra for it, according to the region’s power grid manager.

ISO-New England and Connecticut’s two electric utilities reported to state regulators Monday that they may be able to use new technology to bury the 24-mile, 345-kilovolt cable along sections of its route from Middletown to Norwalk.

The new technology, called statcoms, would help prevent voltage fluctuations on the line that would make the buried sections of the cable unreliable, said Steve Whitley, chief operating officer for ISO-New England.

He said he is “cautiously optimistic” that the project can be built with the original amounts of underground line if statcoms are used.
