18 Injured in Norwalk Oyster Fest Ride Accident Image
UPDATE A ride at the Norwalk Oyster Festival today malfunctioned, injuring 18 persons, most of them children, police said. Norwalk Police Lt. Paul Resnick said most were believed to be minor injuries. He said ambulances from Norwalk Hospital EMS and mutual-aid ambulances from Westport EMS, New Canaan EMS and Darien EMS transported 13 patients (12 children and 1 adult) to three area hospitals for further evaluation and treatment. Norwalk Hospital received a total eight patients, seven of whom were treated and released. One patient was admitted with non- life threatening injuries. Stamford Hospital received two patients, both of whom were treated and released. Bridgeport Hospital received three patients, all of whom were treated and released. Five people refused treatment at the scene, Resnick said. Children were thrown to the ground as the swing ride came to an abrupt halt at about 2:15 p.m. Parents rushed to the ride, knocking down barriers to get to their injured children. Witnesses said there were two bangs before the ride came to a stop. The Norwalk Seaport Association and Stewart Amusement closed all amusement rides immediately following the incident. The rides reopened at approximately 4:30 p.m. after receiving approval of the Fire and Explosion Investigative Unit, police said. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) photo
