Husband and Wife Teachers Retiring After 39 Years Image
Among 28 retiring Westport school employees honored at tonight’s Board of Education meeting were husband and wife teachers Jim and Denise Honeycutt with 39 years service.  Jim told the meeeting that he and Denise met in 1980 when he was transferred from Coleytown Junior High to Long Lots Junior High. Praise, Plaques, and Pans for Landon Image
UPDATE Westport Board of Education members, including chair Michael Gordon (l), and others honored retiring Superintendent of Schools Elliott Landon tonight for his 17 years of service in a pre-meeting ceremony. Gordon said he consulted Landon’s son in coming up with a personal gift and learned that his father was interested in cooking. So he presented him with pans, an apron, and cooking lessons. He also received a a plaque at Staples in his honor and a plaque/proclamation from the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education. Critics Honor Playhouse’s Anne Keefe Image
Anne Keefe, Westport Country Playhouse associate artist, was honored Monday night with the Tom Killen Award at the 26th annual Connecticut Critics Circle Awards. The award, named in honor of the late critic who died at age 33 in 1989, is given in recognition to years of achievement and service to Connecticut’s professional theater. Triplets Celebrate Graduation Image
The Bairaktaris triplets were all smiles tonight at a Ned Dimes Marina graduation party at Compo Beach The boys moved from Redding to Westport in eighth grade, becoming the first triplets in the class of 2016. Johnny (l), who will attend Sacred Heart University, is an active member of the Staples’s chapter of Best Buddies and can often be seen at his job at Joey’s by the Shore, Jaime (c), who also will attend Sacred Heart, has been a volunteer EMT and board member with Westport EMS, an Earthplace employee, and WestportNow contributing photographer, and Joey, who will attend Johnson & Wales University Rhode Island, is a ranking police explorer with the Fairfield Police Department and a Parks and Recreaction employee. North Avenue Closed at Merritt Bridge Image
Westport’s North Avenue was closed today to traffic at the Merritt Parkway Bridge as one-way alternating traffic was discontinued so repair work on the problem-plagued bridge can continue. It is the second successive summer the bridge has been closed as part of a $2.8 million repair project. Pole Gone Image
Workers inspect a utility pole completely sheared off early today when a car crashed into it near 485 Post Road East and burst into flames. The crash, within view of Westport Fire Headquarters, was so violent that the sheared off part of the pole was dragged along by the car until it came to rest. The multiple wires, however, remained in place, supported by other nearby poles. The driver managed to escape without injury. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) photo

Driver Escapes Fiery Crash Near Fire HQ Image
A driver smashed into a utility pole early today on Post Road East, shearing off the pole entirely and touching off a fire that completely engulfed the vehicle about 100 yards from Westport Fire Headquarters at 515 Post Road East. He managed to escape unhurt. Firefighters, some of whom said they heard the crash, quickly bought the blaze under control. Conservation Voters Honor Westporters Image
More than 50 persons gathered today at the Westport home of G. Kenneth Bernhard to honor Westporter Julie Belaga and former Westporter Russ Brenneman for their work in conservation issues in the state. Bernhard, a former state representative, is co-chair of the board of the nonpartisan Connecticut League of Conservation Voters (CTLCV). Sconset Square Special Delivery Image
Westport’s Sconset Square was overflowing today with artifacts, antiques, and European goods as another 40-foot container was unloaded for the Bungalow store. The store gets a container a few times a year and empties the store’s contents to make room. The goods are selected by Bungalow owner Wende Cohen who makes frequent buying trips to Europe.
