Howard Munce, 100, Dean of Westport Artists

UPDATE Westport artist Howard Munce died Saturday at his Westport home at age 100, said his daughter, Mary Brewster, of Redding. Known as the dean of Westport artists, Munce had a long career as an advertising agency art director, graphic designer, illustrator, cartoonist, author and well known art teacher. Main Street Bobby Q’s Finale

Terrapin, a Grateful Dead tribute band, and mainstay at Bobby Q’s restaurant on Westport’s Main Street, plays for the last time tonight before the restaurant closes at the end of the month. The restaurant has been home to music on Main Street since its 2004 opening. According to band members Terrapin will be the first act to play when Bobby Q’s opens in its new location at 11 Merwin St. in Norwalk this summer. Quick Work Douses Fire in Old Library

The scene late tonight as firefighters battled a blaze that broke out in a rooftop HVAC unit of a two-story commercial building at 38 Post Road East overlooking the Saugatuck River. The two-story building, a 1956 expansion to the 1908-built Westport Public Library building, now houses HSBC Bank and Starbucks. Chilly Compo Easter Sunrise Service

The temperature hovered around 40 and clouds obscured the sunrise, but dozens of worshippers turned out at Westport’s Compo Beach today for the traditional Easter sunrise service. New 8-30G Housing for Post Road East

A new 8-30g housing development was announced today by 1177 PRE Associates, LLC, a joint venture co-managed by local commercial real estate developers Phil Craft and Stephen Lawrence. The announcement said the group plans to redevelop the commercial office building at 1177 (also known as 1175) Post Road East to provide 94 new residential units, with 30 percent of the units comprising affordable housing. It said the new development “will be almost entirely studio and one-bedroom units; the six proposed two-bedroom units will have minimum impact on school resources.” The announcement said plans were filed Monday with the Westport Planning and Zoning Department. New Super ‘Geeks’ Sculling

The new Westport Schools Superintendent, Colleen Palmer, visited the Westport Library today for her “Geek the Library” photo by photographer Pam Einarsen, along with dozens of others. Palmer, the Weston schools superintendent who takes over July 1 from retiring Superintendent Elliott Landon, “geeks” sculling. The library’s “What Do You Geek?” public awareness campaign, launched last week, aims to connect people by highlighting their passions as well as communicate the vital role the library plays in the community. The next photo session is Sunday, April 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. Participants are asked to wear a solid black top and bring what they geek. See more photos here. Westport’s prize-winning photographer Lynsey Addario addresses a Save the Children fundraiser tonight in Greenwich against a backdrop of one of her photos. The 1991 Staples High Schol graduate talked about her career in a symposium called “More Than a Snapshot: The Fragile Lives of Children in Conflict.” Addario’s acclaimed book, “It’s What I Do: A Photographer’s Life of Love and War” published by Penguin Press, will be brought to the big screen with Steven Spielberg as director and Jennifer Lawrence in a starring role. Battling Brush Dump Fire

Fire broke out today at the Westport municipal brush dump behind the Westport Weston Health District, 180 Bayberry Lane. Firefighters ferried water from a hydrant across the street on Vineyard Lane until a Wilton fire tanker truck arrived to provide additional water. Cause of the blaze was under investigation.
