Church Filled as Homeless Tina is Laid to Rest

By James Lomuscio

Many in Westport knew of her only as Tina, the homeless woman with long, gray-blonde hair and a limp who regularly asked for money, usually a dollar, in downtown parking lots. Image

But today as more than 150 filled Christ & Holy Trinity Episcopal Church for her funeral, Christine “Tina” Wessel, 63, became more than just a tragic, homeless statistic.

The Rev. Peter R. Powell, the retired CEO of Homes With Hope, eulogized her as a larger-than-life figure, “Christ in our midst,” challenging the community to do even more to address the needs of homelessness in town.

“We need to transform this community, so that no one else lives and dies the way Tina did,” Powell said.

Downtown Snow Mound Relic of the Past Image
The giant snow mound that appeared for years after snowstorms at the intersection of Westport’s Post Road East and Main Street is now a relic of the past. With construction of the Bedford Square development, the temporary storage space—which the state ignored as part of an informal understanding with the town—is no longer an option, Public Works Director Steve Edwards told the Board of Selectmen today. In its place, the board approved use of seven parking spaces on the east side of Main Street as a temporary snow storage location. The snow would be the width of a car, 9 feet, Edwards said, and not impede snow plows or other traffic on the roadway. A permanent solution will be worked out later, he said.  (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Matt Hayners for

Town bodies earlier this year approved a $75,000 appropriation for tree removal, trail reclamation, and design work for the 22-acre property zoned as passive recreational open space.
