Raising Funds for County Soccer Team

Funds are raised for local players in need of financial assistance and to help send its youth teams to Europe for one of the largest youth tournaments there called the Gothia Cup. Staples Soccer Overpowers New Canaan

Two second half goals — one by Patricio Perez Elorza, the other by Timmy Liles — and a penalty kick save by Ry Cohen with the score still 1-0 powered Staples today over New Canaan. The win — coupled with Central’s 1-1 draw with Trumbull, and Ridgefield’s 5-1 defeat of Westhill — assures the Wreckers of an FCIAC playoff berth. The eight-team tournament begins Thursday. Staples Field Hockey Edges Darien 2-1

Staples and Darien had played to a scoreless tie to share of the Class L state championship last season. Staples Boys Cross Country Wins FCIAC Title

The Staples High School Boys Cross Country team today won the FCIAC championship at Waveny Park in New Canaan.  In a rare feat in cross-country, Staples took first, second, and third place in the varsity race. Ben Seiple won the FCIAC championships with a time of 15:27 over the 5-kilometer course. Will Landowne finished second in 15:44 and Christian Myers was third in 15:47.  Ryan Smith and Nick Taubenheim rounded out the top five Staples runners with 13th and 14th place finishes. The team demonstrated Staples’ depth by also taking the top five places in the FCIAC JV championship race; Henry Haas led the way, followed by Morgan Fierro, Luke Lorenz, Jaden Little and AJ Zuckerman.  Jonathan Lorenz won the freshman race and Staples placed three of the top five and six of the top 15.  Now the team, which is currently ranked second in the state, will prepare to defend its Class LL title. Staples Boys Soccer Earns Draw With Fairfield Ludlowe

Fairfield Ludlowe came to Loeffler Field today with the fewest losses in the FCIAC boys soccer league. After 80 minutes of battle, they left with a 0-0. Staples got excellent defense from Chris Martenson, Ryan Fincher, Nick Ambrose and Gabe Baltierra, strong goalkeeping from Ry Cohen, and solid midfield play by Matt Engler and Will Birch. The Wreckers’ best chance came a minute before halftime, when Vaughan Sealey (shown in photo) knocked Engler’s free kick off the inside of the goal post. Staples Soccer Ends Ridgefield Win Streak

The Staples boys soccer team today executed its game plan perfectly at Ridgefield. The Tigers had won nine straight games, and led the FCIAC standings. But led by a stellar defense, the Wreckers tied them 0-0 —- the first time the northerners failed to score in a month. Staples Boys Cross Country Undefeated in FCIAC Dual Meets for Fourth Year in a Row

The Staples Boys Cross Country team today completed its dual meet season undefeated, beating Trumbull, Fairfield Warde, and McMahon at Trumbull to finish with a 14-0 record. The seniors led the way for the team with Ben Seiple finishing second and Will Landowne a second behind him in third place over the 2.9-mile course.  Christian Myers finished in sixth, Sunil Green seventh, and Junior Ryan Smith rounded out the top five in ninth place. Now the team will begin to prepare for the championship part of the season, hoping to repeat as FCIAC and state open champions. The Staples boys soccer team faced plenty of adversity today against division-leading Stamford. They used field player Will Birch in goal, and were a man down for the final 23 minutes. Still, they took the Black Knights to the limit, falling 1-0 on a rebound goal with just 17 minutes to play. Staples Boys Soccer Stuns Unbeaten Norwalk 1-0

Timmy Liles scored in the fifth minute and his Staples boys soccer teammates made the goal stand up, shutting out unbeaten Norwalk 1-0 today in front of a large home crowd at Loeffler Field.

Coupled with Staples’ 1-0 defeat of reigning FCIAC co-champ Greenwich two days earlier, it was an excellent 48 hours for the Westporters.

Liles’ goal began with an outlet from keeper Ry Cohen. Anton Mahr skimmed it forward. The senior midfielder did the rest, finishing smartly from just inside the box.

Staples pressured strongly all game. Will Birch and Matt Engler ran the midfield, with strong flank play from Patricio Perez Elorza and Vaughan Sealey. Behind them, Chris Martenson, Ryan Fincher, Nick Ambrose and Callum Wisher defended stoutly.

Staples Boys X-Country Demonstrates Deep Strength

The Staples Boy’s Cross-Country team today demonstrated why they are showing up in national rankings this season with a dominant performance at the 37th Stratton Brook Invitational in Simsbury. The seven members of the varsity team all placed in the top 15 of the 73-person field. Staples seniors Will Landowne, Ben Seiple, and Christian Myers led the way taking second, third, and fourth place respectively. In a sport in which the low score wins, the Staples varsity team took the title, scoring 30 points to the 77 points of second place Bristol Central.  The JV team’s dominance was even greater, with the team taking first through seventh place in the 193-runner field.
