To Fight Alzheimer’s, ‘A Walk to Remember’

“A Walk to Remember,” a Westport restaurant stroll designed to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association to provide advanced care and to fund research efforts, is scheduled for Saturday, Nov.  4 from 4 to 6 p.m.

Participating restaurants include The ‘Port, Rothbard Ale + Larder, The Spotted Horse, and Tavern on Main, according to Beth Anne Shelman, who created the walk.

Shelman, who hopes to make the charity walk an annual event, said all proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.

The $50 ticket include two free drinks at any of the four participating restaurants, she said, and all participants have the option to purchase additional cocktails and appetizers at happy hour prices.

Quick Work in Putting Out Car Fire

Preservation Award Winner: 383 Greens Farms Road

The barn at 383 Greens Farms Road is among eight recipients of the Westport Historic District Commission (HDC) 2017 Preservation Awards to be presented in a Town Hall ceremony on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. The HDC said the award will be presented to Lawrence Zlatkin and in memory of Maureen Whiteman Zlatkin. Known as the Buckley Barn, c. 1820 the English-style barn was built by Francis Bulkley. The HDC said, “The work was spearheaded by Maureen with the support of her husband Lawrence ...  After her death, her husband said that ‘Maureen loved her barn and she was proud to contribute to its preservation for us and for all of Westport.’” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Raising Funds for County Soccer Team

Funds are raised for local players in need of financial assistance and to help send its youth teams to Europe for one of the largest youth tournaments there called the Gothia Cup. Haberstroh Sons Made Partners at Dad’s Firm

Chuck and Steve Haberstroh, sons and managing directors at dad Charlie Haberstroh’s Westport-based CastleKeep Investment Advisors LLC, have been made partners, together owning a minority share of CastleKeep.

The firm serves high and ultrahigh net worth individuals and families in Fairfield County and across the globe. An announcement described the addition of the partners as part of the company’s long-term succession plan.

Charlie Haberstroh, who remains president and CEO, will maintain a majority ownership stake in the company, the announcement said. In addition, Lauren Quesada was promoted to vice president, investments.

“We manage the financial affairs for wealthy families,” said Charlie Haberstroh. “Many of our clients also happen to be business owners. We’ve been helping our clients manage their assets, which include family owned businesses, through multiple generations for years. This was the right time for our business and our family to practice what we preach.”

Wining and Dining at Wakeman Town Farm

Westport’s Wakeman Town Farm tonight hosted 25 guests for an “intimate” Chef’s Dinner in the farmhouse’s Tim’s Kitchen. The meal was prepared by chefs at Norwalk’s Cask Republic, 99 Washington St., which describes itself as “a neighborhood restaurant serving upscale tavern fare.” The four-course meal included smoked swordfish loin with parsnip and celery root pastel as well as slow roasted porchetta, a savoury, fatty, and moist boneless pork roast of Italian culinary tradition. Chef’s Dessert at Wakeman Town Farm Dinner

Raising Awareness of Parkinson Disease

Preservation Award Winner: Wakeman Town Farm

The Wakeman Town Farm—comprised of the farmhouse, relocated carriage house, and barn at 134 Cross Highway—is among the eight recipients of the Westport Historic District Commission (HDC) 2017 Preservation Awards to be presented in a Town Hall ceremony on Monday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. The HDC cited the Wakeman Town Farm Committee, Architect Peter Wormser, and the Westport Public Works Department. The HDC said, “Wakeman Town Farm Committee member, Peter Wormser, longtime Westporter and architect, gifted his time and talent to the design of the Wakeman farmhouse while the Public Works Department oversaw the construction.” The award will be presented by First Selectman Jim Marpe, Historic District Commission Chair Francis Henkels, and members of the Historic District Commission. Chamber Donates $5,500 to Homes With Hope

The Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce has donated $5,500 to Homes With Hope (HWH) to be used to aid their Gillespie Center food pantry.

According to WWCC Executive Director Matthew Mandell, the funds donated come from proceeds from the Slice of Saugatuck festival that drew 2,500 persons and 54 participating businesses.

The donation brings Slice of Saugatuck gifts to the total amount donated from this and past Slice Festivals to HWH to $24,000, Mandell said.

Mandell said the WWCC also donated $500 to Remarkable Steam, the nonprofit entity that created and runs the MakerFaire, which once again participated in this year’s festival.
