WestportNow Teardown of the Day: 4 Charbeth Lane

WestportNow.com Image
An application for a permit to demolish the house at Westport’s 4 Charbeth Lane, off Long Lots Road, is in process. Built in 1966, the two-story ranch has 2,313-square feet, is situated on a 1.11-acre property and, according to assessor records, last changed ownership in May 2011. Because the house was built more than 50 years ago, the application will be reviewed by the Westport Historic District Commission. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Merritt Crash Down Embankment Traps One

WestportNow.com Image
Westport firefighters had to use extrication tools to free a person trapped in a vehicle that went off the Merritt Parkway northbound between Exits 42 and 44 at about 6:35 a.m. today during a heavy rainstorm. The car impacted a tree on the driver’s side, said Westport Assistant Chief Brett Kirby, and firefighters had to remove the passenger side door to remove the victim, he said. The patient was transported by Westport EMS. “We would like to remind everyone to take extreme caution when driving in inclement weather,” Kirby said. “Roadways can become slick with just a small amount of rainfall, particularly after a long dry spell.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Contributed photo

Malloy Hails EPA Decision to Tighten Restrictions on Smog

By Ana Radelat

Washington – Gov. Dannel P. Malloy today lauded the U.S. Environmental Agency’s reversal of its decision to delay a new rule that would lower the level of ozone emissions permitted from fossil-fuel burning, such as the exhaust from auto tailpipes and power plant smokestacks.

The new Obama-era rule was scheduled to be implemented on Oct. 1, but EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt decided in June to hold off implementing that rule for about a year to study its impact. A provision in the Clean Air Act allows for the delay of implementation of new regulations if the agency needs to collect more information.

Late Wednesday, Pruitt decided to allow the tougher standards for ozone emissions to be put into place as scheduled.

“This reversal of direction bodes well for the people of Connecticut and for all those fighting for clean air in America,” Malloy said.

Op-Ed: Parks & Rec Chair Addresses Compo Concerns

(Editor’s Note: Charles Haberstroh, chairman of the Westport Parks & Recreation Commission, submitted this commentary about recent concerns raised about Compo Beach.)

Compo Beach is one of Westport’s most treasured assets, and has been a key priority for our Parks & Recreation Commission. There have recently been concerns and recommendations expressed in the media as well as political emails sent to Westport residents.

WestportNow.com Image
Westport’s Compo Beach on a recent weekend. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo

We of course welcome all ideas to improve Compo Beach. As the chairman of the Parks & Recreation Commission, I would like to share some facts and my thoughts with the community.

The 4th of July and Labor Day weekends have historically seen a surge in visits to Compo Beach. However, an unexpected surge occurred this past Sunday, July 30th. We did limit the sale of daily parking passes on that day from 2:30 to 4 p.m. consistent with our policy when the available spaces at Compo Beach reach 75.

No resident beachemblem holders were turned away -– only those attempting to purchase a daily pass.
