State police said in the first accident, a car rear-ended a van with four occupants. It veered off the road, went down an embankment, hit several trees, and rolled over.

A rear seat passenger not wearing a seatbelt was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. State police identified him as Muhamad Bahaga, 32, of the Bronx, N.Y. The three others suffered less serious injuries and were transported by Westport EMS to Norwalk Hospital.

Moments later, possibly as a result of the first accident, a car rear-ended a tractor-trailer. Three occupants of the car fled the scene, running across the southbound lanes. They were eventually found and arrested in a neighborhood off of Greens Farms Road, officials said.

Police said at 12:09 a.m. Officer David Scinto, who is a K-9 handler, was on routine patrol and pulled over Remington Woodhull of Roseville Road for a speeding violation.

The officer could see that he was extremely nervous and as a result, believed that Woodhull may be hiding contraband in the vehicle even though denied having anything illegal, said Lt. David Farrell.

“At this point, Officer Scinto deployed his Police Service Dog Atlas in order to determine if there were narcotics in the vehicle,” he said. The dog indicated there were and upon a search, a small amount of heroin was located.

WestportNow.com Image
The governor’s budget office said today Westport’s Educational Cost Sharing (ECS) aid from the state would be cut an additional $443,947, bringing the total reduction from the previous fiscal year to $1,517,602. In addition, Westport will see a $146,394 reduction in its Local Capital Improvement Program (LoCIP) grant. CT Identifies $50 million in Mid-Year Cuts to Municipalities

By Jacqueline Rabe Thomas

www.ctmirror.org

City and town leaders today learned how much less the state will be sending their municipalities for education and construction projects for the fiscal year that ends July 1.

[The Educational Cost Sharing (ECS) aid to Westport would be cut an additional $443,947, bringing the total reduction from the previous fiscal year to $1,517,602. In addition, Westport will see a $146,394 reduction in its Local Capital Improvement Program (LoCIP) grant.]

The $50 million in midyear cuts announced by the governor’s budget office come after the legislature adopted a budget with $20 million in unassigned cuts to municipalities and $30 million from grants for local construction projects.

While every town is touched by the reductions announced today, the cuts to education largely fall on the state’s wealthiest communities.

Squirrel Knocks Out Power

A squirrel on a transformer knocked out power to 80 customers early today in the northern part of Westport, an Eversource spokesman said.

The outage from 7:43 a.m. to 9:20 a.m. affected customers in the Crooked Mile Road, Cavalry Road, Viking Green and nearby areas, said spokesman Frank Poirot.

He said repair crews found the cause to be a squirrel on a transformer.

“In cold weather, they go there to keep warm,” Poirot said.

Gallery: Baron’s South Uncovered

A photo tour of the town-owned Baron’s South property following several weeks of work by arborists removing dead trees with widow maker branches, out-of-control brush and tree-strangling bittersweet vines. The work was overseen by Town Tree Warden Bruce Lindsay, who was named to the post three years ago. Town bodies earlier this year approved a $75,000 appropriation for tree removal, trail reclamation, and design work for the 22-acre property zoned as passive recreational open space.
