‘Our Town’ Tribute to Bill Meyer

WestportNow.com Image
The Westport Community Theatre (WCT) tonight held a fundraiser to benefit a newly established scholarship honoring Westporter Bill Meyer, a volunteer for WCT and many other causes. It included a pre-show reception at the Westport Historical Society followed by a staged reading of “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder in the Town Hall theater with many local politicians and well-known Westporters joining the cast. The scholarship will be given in Meyer’s name to a Staples High School theater department senior “who personifies the spirit of volunteerism that Bill lived every day.” Meyer died in June 2014 at age 85. Some Westport fire and police personnel responded to Fairfield as well after the schools and police there received telephone threats that prompted a lockdown of all 17 public school buildings.

The lockdown was later downgraded to a lockout, meaning all perimeters were secured.

About 300 parents went to a police staging area at the Quick Center on the Fairfield University campus where they were told there was no credible threat to the schools at the time but as a precaution all Fairfield schools would have early dismissal.
