Papal Visit: The Westport Connection

WestportNow.com Image
Westport resident Lawrence Hoy and his Westport-based Lawrence Hoy Studios has created the crucifix which will hang as the centerpiece to the stage where Pope Francis will deliver a mass on Sunday outside the Philadelphia Art Museum. The design of the crucifix is in keeping with the austere aesthetics of Pope Francis. It is constructed of composition gold-leafed wood, as opposed to the usual real gold leaf. “Normally we’d use real gold,” said Hoy. “But we were instructed to use the composition gold which is not a precious metal.” Making creations for the Pope is nothing new to Hoy. He has also made the furnishings for John Paul II in Central Park and Benedict XVI at Ground Zero and Yankee Stadium. Contributed photo

Damage was limited to the immediate area of the bathroom, where the burning fan dropped from a ceiling. The fan smashed a toilet, spraying water over the area which helped contain the flames, said Chief Andrew Kingsbury.

The initial call came in as an alarm at Sam Sloat Coins with a smell of smoke at the rear of the store.

Further investigation disclosed Wishlist was filled with smoke, which extended to the adjacent Luxe Nail and Spa and its neighbor, Sam Sloat Coins.
