North Avenue Bridge Open to One Lane of Traffic

WestportNow.com Image
With little fanfare, the North Avenue Bridge over the Merritt Parkway, closed by construction since late June, opened at about 6:30 a.m. today to alternating one-way traffic in time for school opening Thursday. Scott Fishoff of adjacent Northside Lane was one of the first across. “I can’t tell you how happy I am that the bridge is open,” he said. “I no longer need to drive the extra five miles to take my dogs (Satchmo and Bosco) to Wakeman field for our morning walk.” The bridge will remain open until 6 p.m. on weekdays but closed nights and weekends. Overflowing Donations for Soles4Souls

WestportNow.com Image
A collection box for Soles4Souls was overflowing today in the Westport Town Hall lobby. The month-long drive by the nonprofit for people in need in the United States and abroad ends Friday. Westport Attorney G. Kenneth Bernhard, who is spearheading the drive, said Westporters so far have donated more than 600 pairs of shoes at Town Hall and another box at the Westport Center for Senior Activities. “The town’s response to this drive has been typically Westport—generous and more generous,” Bernhard said. Readying a Sidewalk on the North Avenue Bridge

WestportNow.com Image
A sidewalk on the North Avenue Bridge over the Merritt Parkway is readied today as the bridge reopens Wednesday to one lane of alternating traffic from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. It was not clear whether or when the sidewalk will be open to pedestrians. The $2.8 million renovation project began in June and was scheduled to be completed in time for school opening on Thursday. But greater deterioration than anticipated delayed the project, now scheduled to be completed in October. The bridge will be closed to all traffic nights and weekends so repair work can continue. Letter: Takes Issue With Story Citing Staples Enrollment

To the Editor:

Your story dated August 25, 2015 appears to be extremely misleading and lacks fact-based information. The headline “Already Over Crowded, Staples will get 100 more Students” is extremely misleading to your readers. This leaves the reasonable reader to believe Staples High School will get 100 more students this school year… And that the high school is in a crisis mode with no plan to deal with overcrowding.

The Facts are below:

In 10/1/2012 SHS had actual enrollment of 1,882 students
In 10/1/2013 SHS had actual enrollment of 1,837 students
In 10/1/2014 SHS had actual enrollment of 1,855 students
In 10/1/2015 SHA was forecasted to have enrollment of 1,888

Source: Board of Education Adopted Budget

The facts show that Staples High School enrollment is forecasted to be approximately the same level in 10/2015 as it was in 10/2012. Moreover, enrollment for SHS, as forecasted by the administration for 10/1/2015, is an additional 33 students vs prior year, not 100.

The numbers and the story do not add up.

Paul Block
Member, Westport Board of Education

(Editor’s note: the original story says Staples will have 100 more students than it can accommodate. It does not say 100 more students will enroll this fall, though the headline erroneously suggests that is the case. The headline and story have been updated. The story now notes Staples has been overcapacity for several years, but the 1,900 figure cited by Landon is the highest enrollment in recent years and is 45 more than last year.

Letter: Praises WestportNow Series on Senior Housing

To the Editor:

The Coalition for Westport (CFW) congratulates WestportNow for its outstanding series of articles on the lack of adequate senior housing in Westport. (Click here for series)

The series presented the history of the senior housing issue and the manner in which the Planning & Zoning Commission voted to change the zoning of the entire Baron’s South property to recreation/open space.

Our town, which is such a leader in creating and providing first class community amenities, has failed abysmally in looking after its seniors, a shocking indictment of the shortsightedness of those charged with the responsibility of ensuring that Westport welcomes and values residents of all ages.

The personal consequences of this lack of planning was highlighted by telling the stories of long-term residents who have been forced to leave Westport and find housing facilities in other towns. Many of our neighboring towns boast one or more such facilities.

North Ave. Merritt Bridge to Open Wednesday to One-Way Traffic

In place for Thursday’s school opening, the North Avenue bridge spanning the Merritt Parkway will reopen to alternating, one-way traffic beginning Wednesday at 6 a.m. and remain open until 6 p.m., Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe announced today.

The bridge will be closed evenings and weekends until completion of the $2.8 million project in late October, he said in a news release.

“Most importantly, this arrangement will allow Westport’s school buses to utilize the bridge, thereby decreasing the likelihood of severe delays to the school system’s bus schedule,” Marpe said.

Marpe and Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon urged parents to have their children take school buses to decrease traffic volume and to minimize delays

DUI Arrest in July Accident

Jacqueline Hernandez: released on $500 bond. Westport Police photo

A Norwalk woman whose early morning accident landed her and a passenger in the hospital July 19 turned herself in Monday for operating under the influence, Westport police said.

Jacqueline Hernandez, 33, arrived at Police Headquarters after learning that there was a warrant for her arrest, Capt. Samuel Arciola said.

“The arrest stems from a motor vehicle accident which occurred in the early morning hours on July 19, 2015,” Arciola said. “From the accident scene on that date, both the vehicle occupant and operator were transported to Norwalk Hospital for evaluation.”

Arciola said that based on the officer’s observations and evidence at the scene, a search warrant for the Hernandez’s blood alcohol content was granted.

West Nile in Norwalk, ‘Matter of Time’ Here

By James Lomuscio

Although no mosquitoes in Westport of Weston have tested positive for West Nile Virus, “it is only a matter of time” since the virus has shown up in Norwalk and 14 other parts of the state, Mark A.R. Cooper, director of health for the Westport Weston Health District (WWHD), said today. WestportNow.com Image
Mark A. R. Cooper: take precautions. File photo

“It is only a matter of time before mosquitoes become positive for the virus in Westport,” said Cooper. “It happens every year around this time.

“Therefore, it is time to start advising citizens to take precautions against mosquito bites,” he added.

According to recent reports from the New Haven-based Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, “which has traps set up all over the state, including Westport,” said Cooper, 15 towns have trapped mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus.

Celebrating a New York Opening

WestportNow.com Image
“Love & Money,” which previewed in late July and earlier this month at the Westport Country Playhouse, tonight celebrated its official opening night performance at New York’s Signature Theatre, 480 W. 42nd St. Created by playwright A.R. Gurney (r) and directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Mark Lamos (l) and starring Maureen Anderman, the comedic play explores the trials of class, family, legacy, and race.  According to Gurney, “Love & Money” is the third play he has written that previewed in Westport and moved on to New York theaters. The two others were “Children” in the 1970s and “The Fourth Wall,” in the 1980s. “The Westport Country Playhouse has always been an influential base for my career as a playwright,” Gurney said. “Love & Money” runs through Oct. 4 at the off-Broadway nonprofit venue. Malloy Extends DMV Deadlines to Offset Long Customer Lines

By Keith M. Phaneuf

www.ctmirror.org

With the Department of Motor Vehicles expected to continue struggling with long lines for a few more weeks because of a computer overhaul, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced today he would extend deadlines for license and vehicle registration renewals until Oct. 10.

The governor also urged residents, if they could, to avoid visiting DMV offices for a few weeks.

The department, which recently undertook its first computer system upgrade in decades and temporarily closed its offices earlier this month, has faced huge customer lines since reopening last Tuesday.

“We know it has caused unusually large lines at the DMV across the state,” Malloy told Capitol reporters. “I understand the frustration customers are feeling having to stand in those lines to get their normal business done.”

Already Overcrowded, Staples Enrollment at 1,900

(Editor’s note: The headline and original story have been clarified to say that this year’s Staples enrollment is 1,900, 100 over capacity, a situation that has existed for several years but this is highest in recent years.)

By James Lomuscio

WestportNow.com Image
Elliott Landon: “We’re packing them in (at Staples).” Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
UPDATE The highest Staples enrollment in recent years—1,900, which is 100 over capacity—decreasing student populations in the early grades, and nine new administrators set the stage for the 2015-16 school year that beings Thursday, Westport Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon said today.

“We’re going to have to take a hard look at the increased enrollment at Staples,” said Landon, who has announced his retirement at the end of this school year after 17 years. He said that he has several proposals to address the issue, but declined to release them yet.

“We’re packing them in,” he added. “We’re at 1,900, and it was built for 1,800, even though when was being built, we had asked for enough space for 2,000. We’re using closets, we took away meeting rooms, a classroom in the library.”

Landon is convinced that the Staples student population, which has been more than 1,800 at least going back to 2012 and is 45 more than last year, will continue to swell, eventually surpassing 2,000.

A back to school enforcement and education campaign focuses on traffic safety in and around school zones, an announcement said.

“Westport officers will be targeting drivers who are using cell phones and speeding in school zones, as well as disregarding school bus signals in Westport,” it said.

“During this time of year the Westport Police Department focuses on protecting children from motorists who disregard the law, especially around school zones and bus stops where they congregate,” said Capt. Sam Arciola.
