Staples Boys Soccer Edges St. Joseph 2-1

The obstacles were great todayin Trumbull as the Staples boys soccer team faced St. Joseph. The Wreckers were missing four starters – including co-captain Jack Scott—to injury and illness.

Andrew Puchala celebrates his goal against St. Joseph today in Trumbull. The defender finally rammed in Steven Sobel’s long throw, after two Staples shots hit posts and bounced crazily in the goal mouth. But the scrappy Stapleites prevailed 2-1. Their two goals came in a 1:10 span, midway through the second half. First Andrew Puchala finished Steven Sobel’s long throw – but not before Charlie Leonard and George Kokkalis hit posts, and the ball bounced around the goal for a while. Then Sobel’s cross caromed off a defender’s head, for an own goal.

The Cadets halved the deficit on a shot from the corner, but Noah Schwaeber’s excellent goalkeeping, plus solid defense from Puchala, Kokkalis, Connor Weiler and Kenji Goto, earned them the victory.

The Wreckers are now 3-1-1. They host Central on Monday (4 p.m.) in another tough FCIAC match.

Funfetti is Looking for a Home

Funfetti
Funfetti. Connecticut Humane Society

Hi, I’m Funfetti! I’m a calm, quiet girl who enjoys taking walks outside. Most of the time you’ll find my nose to the ground. I can’t help it though, there’s always something good to smell! I’m pretty laid back and would be just as happy to go for a hike as I would be to curl up on the couch and watch movies with you. Oh, and I love a good back scratch, too! I have not had much experience with kids, but I am willing to consider a home with children who can be gentle and respectful of pets. If you would like to meet me, please familiarize yourself with Connecticut Humane Society adoption requirements and come visit me at the Westport Branch of the Connecticut Humane Society!
