Staples Gets New Sculpture

WestportNow.com Image
The sculpture “Woman’s Head” by American artist Joseph Goto was installed Friday at Westport’s Staples High School. The sculpture, competed about 1980, was moved from its home about a quarter mile away aboard a front loader. Town Curator Kathie Bennewitz, with help of the town’s Arts Advisory Committee, arranged to have it added to the Westport Schools Permanent Art Collection. “This could be the start of a sculpture garden,” said Staples Principal John Dodig. The state’s memorial to the victims of the attacks is located on a peninsula at the park where people gathered on that day in 2001 to view smoke visible from the attacks in lower Manhattan. The site was also used as a staging area for Connecticut’s relief efforts to New York City.

But that will change Saturday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. when he brings his complete stage production to Fairfield University’s Quick Center for the Performing Arts.

“In the 20-plus years that we’ve lived in Fairfield County, this is really the first time he has done so on this scale,” said Susan Feliciano, his wife.

“This is the same production that he carries around the world. In fact, on Saturday, he and his team will be traveling to London and by the end of the year they will have performed in Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Canada, England, Ireland, Israel and throughout the United States.”
