Bad Weather Cast Clouds Over Businesses, Too

By Zoe Brown

Despite sunshine the past couple of days, Westport’s summer weather, ranging from rain to pop-up storms to searing temperatures throughout June, has hurt the bottom line for local businesses dependent on sunny summers.

“This year’s weather has been the worst we’ve seen in 26 years,” said Joey Romeo, owner of Joey’s by the Shore, the food concession at Compo Beach. “June, for example, has been the wettest in history.

“As a business that is almost entirely dependent on the weather, we’ve been significantly impacted,” added Romeo.

John Kantor, owner of Longshore Sailing School, agreed that the weather has put a damper on things.

“I was stunned when I found out in April I would be receiving it,” Deford said today, two days after the White House announced the award. “I was still living in Westport at the time.

“I was naturally thrilled and pretty humbled by it, looking at the others being honored,” he added. “It’s not the sort of thing you imagine at all, and I have no idea how the nominating process works.”

DeFord is one of 12 of the 2012 National Humanities Award winners, including author Joan Didion, William G. Bowen, president of Princeton, DeFord’s alma mater, Class of 1962, former Poet Laureate Marilynne Robinson and author Robert Putnam, best known for his work “Bowling Alone.”

Sewer Line Blockage Closes Main Street

A sewer line blockage that affected a number of stores closed Westport’s Main Street late today as fire apparatus responded to the scene.

The street was reopened shortly after 5 p.m. as the blockage was traced to a line in Parker Harding Plaza, according to fire officials on the scene.

Representatives of the town’s Public Works Department and Building Department were assisting firefighters in dealing with the problem, the officials said.

The problem was initially reported at L’Occitane, 47 Main St., but also impacted several nearby businesses, they said.
