Power Back for Westporters

UPDATE Power was back early today for several hundred Westport homes affected by a four-hour outage Tuesday night caused by fallen trees and power lines, according to Connecticut Light & Power Company.

Most of those affected appeared to be in an area around Punch Bowl Drive—earlier misidentified as Gault Park Drive—in the Coleytown area where a large tree fell at about 8 p.m. as high winds and heavy rain swept through the area.

CL&P crews had power back around midnight. Town workers moved in this morning to remove the tree and debris.

Most of the largest outages in this area occurred to the east. United Illuminating Company at one point reported more than 5,400 customers out in Bridgeport where the National Weather Service said wind gusts of 54 miles an hour occurred at Bridgeport’s Sikorsky Airport.

High Winds Bring Down Power Lines

UPDATE Here we go again. High winds accompanied by heavy rains tonight brought down trees and power lines, leaving scores of Westport customers in the dark.

At 11 p.m., Connecticut Light & Power Company said 216 Westport customers were without power.

At Gault Park Drive in the Coleytown area, firefighters said a large tree brought down primary power lines, plunging the neighborhood into darkness.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Advisory for the area from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wednesday, warning of possible wind gusts of 45 to 50 miles per hour. Sikorsky Airport in Bridgeport reported a gust of 54 miles per hour at 9:04 p.m., the Weather Service said.

Westport 2010 Christmas Fire Tied to Fireplace

A Stamford Christmas Day fire that killed five persons and whose cause today was said to be fireplace ashes recalled a Westport Christmas-related fire a year ago that started under similar circumstances. Image

A small fire broke out on Dec. 26, 2010 in fireplace ashes left in the mud room of a home at 82 Hillspoint Road, the Westport Fire Department said. (See WestportNow Dec. 26, 2010)

The homeowners managed to douse the flames with a portable fire extinguisher before firefighters arrived, said Assistant Chief Robert Kepchar.

He said the homeowners stated that they had taken the ashes from the fireplace the day before, Christmas evening, and placed them in a bag and a cardboard box and put them in the mud room.

Working to Improve Retaining Wall Image
Work was under way today on Westport’s Compo Road South at Narrow Rocks Road on a retaining wall there. According to a supervisor on site, because of a deteriorating section of the retaining wall, it is being replaced with an architecturally concrete wall tooled to match the adjacent ledge “with esthetic consistency.”  He said the work would be completed by the end of the week and the final stage of the reconstruction will be scheduled for next spring. Christmas Fires No Stranger to Westport

The shock and horror of the Christmas Day fire in Stamford that claimed five lives brought back memories to some Westport firefighters involved in two Christmas-time fires seven years ago, fortunately none with the loss of human lives, though a pet died in one blaze. longshore12250411260.jpg

The 2004 Christmas Day fires occurred within hours of each other –- one at the Inn at Longshore and one at a house at the corner of Lincoln Street and Post Road West. (See WestportNow Dec. 25,2004)

Flames traced to an overheated steam pipe caused extensive fire and smoke damage to the Inn at Longshore. There was also extensive damage to the home. No one was injured in either blaze—the hotel was closed at the time—but a family pet died in the house fire.

Westport dispatched all its equipment, called in off-duty and volunteer firefighters, and requested mutual aid assistance for both fires, the first at 1:43 a.m. at 1 Lincoln St., and the second at 5:08 a.m. at Longshore.

Christmas Offering

The Saugatuck Congregational Church annual Christmas Day feast went ahead as scheduled today in Westport’s Christ & Holy Trinity Church Great Hall, the same location for the Thanksgiving Day feast which also was relocated because of the Nov. 20 fire that heavily damaged the host church. While today’s turnout was lower than Thanksgiving, many were grateful for the plentiful food and fixings donated by residents and area merchants. Among those attending was the Rev. Ted Hoskins, the popular clergyman who served as pastor of the church from 1967 to 1994 before moving to Maine. Larry Untermeyer for
