The Wrecker win before a large crowd at Fairfield Ludlowe High lifted Staples to its third consecutive FCIAC final – and fourth in the past five years.

The Wreckers face Fairfield Warde on Wednesday (7 p.m.), at Norwalk High’s Testa Field. The Westporters are looking to three-peat as FCIAC champs.

The first-half goal came just four minutes after Mikey Scott took the field. The dynamic midfielder had missed two games after taking 30 stitches in his forehead, thanks to a collision. Scott’s long throw had been missed. But he unleashed a rocket, and Brendan Lesch was in the box to flick on.

According to Ruth Cavayero, Deputy Town Clerk, 1,203 absentee ballots have been issued since Oct. 1, and 1,064 have been returned.

“We’ll go to the Post Office once in the morning and again at 8 o’clock,” she said, adding that absentee votes will be counted throughout Election Day.

The absentee ballots not only represent those who are out of town, such as college students, but the elderly and ill who are physically unable to get to their respective polling stations.

Moody’s Affirms Westport’s Triple-A Rating

Moody’s Investor Service said today it has assigned a triple-A (Aaa) rating to the Town of Westport’s $20.1 million general obligation refunding bond issue.

In an opinion released to clients, the rating agency said concurrently it has affirmed the outstanding Aaa rating on the town’s $162 million in parity debt, which is secured by the town’s general obligation unlimited tax pledge.

Finance Director John Kondub has told the town funding bodies that there could be as much as an $800,000 savings to taxpayers in the refinancing, expected to be offered on Thursday.

Moody’s said the highest quality rating “reflects the town’s sizable tax base, high wealth indices and modest debt levels.”

“We actually did receive some concerns about this happening, and it’s not on any particular model,” said Andy Barcena, consumer relations representative for Nissan North America in Franklin, Tenn.

“It’s very rare, and it’s not a normal issue,” he said. “That’s why we’re asking anyone who encountered this to give us a call.”

Westport residents Robert and Inez Liftig were seated in their 2009 Nissan Rogue in the driveway of their 94 Easton Road home when the side airbags went off as they were about to head out for an afternoon ride. The car had not even been started yet, said Robert.

Clinton Stumps for Democrats Image
A day after President Obama was in Bridgeport, former President Bill Clinton was in Norwalk Sunday night urging voters to vote for incumbent Democrat Jim Himes and the Democratic ticket, including his former Yale School classmate Richard Blumenthal for the Senate.  Since it was Halloween night, Clinton compared the election to a trick or treat situation and said that “if you want to get the treat, you have to avoid the trick.” He said the opposing candidates did not deal in facts. Former President Bill Clinton was the featured speaker Sunday evening at a get out the vote rally at Norwalk’s Sono Field House in support of Democratic candidates Jim Himes, Richard Blumenthal, Dan Malloy and Nancy Wyman.

Westport Democrats joined other area supporters for the rally that did not see Clinton arrive until about 10 p.m. following another rally in Hartford.

The emcee for the evening was professional tennis player, Jim Blake, who was raised in Fairfield County. Blake welcomed the attentive audience and urged everyone to be sure to vote.

He praised Jim Himes, who like Blake, attended Harvard University and said that Himes, a Rhodes Scholar, really stood out even in the impressive group of Harvard students.

Town Clerk Patricia Strauss said the sale of 124, 126, and 128 Beachside Ave. with 600 feet of water frontage was recorded Friday and reaped $50,000 in conveyance tax revenues for the town and $188,000 for the state. No mortgage was listed.

The properties, which most recently had been listed at $25 million—down from a more recent $27.9 million listing—include a 10-bed, 11-bath, 10,500-square foot, 1955-built home on 2.17 acres at 128 Beachside Ave. that sold for $12.5 million.

Next to it is 126 Beachside with a two-bedroom, four-bath, 1981-built two-story home on 2.42 acres which sold for $5.4 million. The third parcel, two acres between 126 and 128 containing a driveway and small guest house, at 124 Beachside Ave. sold for $2.1 million.
