Flags Flying Again—And Will Remain

WestportNow.com Image
The American flags went up today on Westport’s Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge in Westport’s center for the 4th of July holiday—and will remain there until November, thanks to the generosity of a private donor. The individual, associated with Westport private equity firm Sterling Investment Partners, stepped in when budget cuts forced the town to fly the flags only on holidays. Two Westport Women Volunteer on Hospital’s Front Line

By James Lomuscio

In the world of volunteering, Westporters Martha Rosenfeld and Karen Tricarico are among those on the front lines –- the Norwalk Hospital Emergency Department.WestportNow.com Image

Like Westport EMS and fire volunteers, theirs is often a fast paced and frenetic atmosphere where doctors and nurses tend to a revolving door of patients, some suffering minor ailments but some in the throes of a heart attacks, kidney failure or anaphylactic shock.

The roles that Tricarico and Rosenfeld play: evoking a sense of calm and compassion in times of fear and uncertainty. Both co-chair the Emergency Department Volunteers.

The 19-member team sets up rooms, sanitizes beds, gets patients water, helps them to rest rooms, and above all, they say, offers patients and their family members friendly support.

Comings and Goings: Coppola Salon Moving to Post Road East

WestportNow.com Image
After 13 years in its current location at 20 Wilton Road on the west bank of the Saugatuck River in Westport’s center, the Peter Coppola Salon is moving to 616 Post Road East in the strip of stores that includes the Bombay Restaurant. Owned by Newtown resident Vincent Palumbo, Peter Coppola Salon will reopen there in September and not lose a day because the move will take place on a weekend. Marcy Wright, Coppola’s general manager, said the business is moving because the current site—part of the Inn at National Hall complex—has been sold and is being converted into an all-office complex. “We’re so thrilled to be moving to space on Post Road where we’ll be closer to the center of town with lots of foot and vehicle traffic—so many more people who did not know us will begin to see us,” she said. “It will be amazing and beautiful.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Born in Norristown, Penn., on May 23, 1928, to Anne and Ernest H. Grauel Sr., Ernie spent his early years in Black Rock, followed by about six decades in Westport.

He was an artist his whole life, and at times worked as a theater projectionist and taxi driver. He loved Westport and was a local fixture, recognizable by his handlebar mustache and hats.

Ernie was mentored by the artists James Dougherty and Karl Anderson, and studied at the Pratt Institute, The Cooper Union and The Art Students League. He worked mostly in oils with an abstract, cubist style. His works were exhibited in shows throughout the region.

Private Donor To Ensure Star Spangled Banners Yet Wave

By James Lomuscio

UPDATE A private individual has stepped forward, offering to pay for the maintenance of about 100 American flags on Westport’s Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge so they can fly from April until Thanksgiving instead of just holidays.WestportNow.com Image

First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff, who today initially would not identify the donor, said later that Westporter Audrey Hertzel, a 19-year employee of Westport-based private equity firm Sterling Investment Partners, arranged for an individual associated with her employer to guarantee to pay for the annual maintenance.

The cost of maintaining the flags and flagpoles was estimated at $2,500, a cost the town’s Department of Public Works could not afford due to budget constraints.

“We’ll put them up for the Fourth of July weekend, and they’ll be there until November until the weather gets bad,” said Joseloff. “There’s no better way to show patriotism than flying the flag.”
