It will be the first time in the town’s Memorial Day parade history that a father and son will ride side-by-side as grand marshals: George Marks Sr. and George Marks Jr., World War II and Vietnam War veterans respectively, and both retired Westport police officers.

“I’m thrilled to have him with me,” said the elder Marks, 90, who was one of the town’s first police officers. “I was a little surprised when Bill Vornkahl (veterans council president) called me, but I thought it was great. It’s quite an honor.”

“It’s a great to be able to share the day with Dad,” said George Marks Jr. who traveled from South Carolina to march.

FEMA Urges Signup for March Storm Relief

The appeal, in a message to news organizations, followed announcement Friday night by Gov. M. Jodi Rell that that President Obama had reversed an earlier decision and approved federal disaster assistance for homeowners, renters and businesses affected by the severe storms that swept through Connecticut in March.

“This is wonderful news – and it is exactly the right decision,” Rell said in a statement.

“The information we provided just a day ago to the federal government demonstrated conclusively that Connecticut’s residents and employers suffered major, unreimbursed losses from these storms. They need help – and now they are getting it.”
