2009 In Pictures

Once again, WestportNow presents as a New Year’s gift to our readers a review of the past year through the eyes of Westporters who contributed photos, video and illustrations to WestportNow in 2009.

The year 2009 was unusually busy, and we are pleased to have been your No. 1 source for breaking and ongoing news coverage of Westport for the seventh successive year.

Dozens of persons contributed news stories, photos, and illustrations to WestportNow over the past year. The 2009 review, with video and drawings for the first time, includes almost 350 entries and represents the work of 30 photographers by name and one illustrator.

In 2009, WestportNow continued to record remarkable growth. This last week alone, while unusually busy, WestportNow had more than 90,000 page views and more than 15,000 unique visitors. No other Westport news source, print or online, delivers as many daily or weekly readers to its advertisers.

We urge you to patronize our advertisers and spread the word about WestportNow. We continue to be grateful for the public trust shown in us and look forward to continuing to serve Westport in 2010. Best New Year wishes to all WestportNow readers.

NY Times: Trend in Westport to Smaller Homes?

Today’s New York Times highlights what it says may be a growing trend in Westport and other communities—builders erecting smaller homes.WestportNow.com Image

In a story in the Sunday real estate section, writer Lisa Prevost quotes builder Scott Buddenhagen as saying an example of this is a house he is building on Long Lots Lane. The house address is 44 Long Lots Road, at the corner of Long Lots Lane.

The 4,400-square foot structure will offer his usual custom architectural detailing and custom woodwork, the Times said.

It has a combined kitchen/family room area, four bedrooms, four baths, two powder rooms, a small library, a mud room and a large dining room. Even if people rarely use a formal dining room, Buddenhagen said, “they still envision that big holiday feast.”

Westporter Rescues Woman from Car in Lake

By Dave Matlow

Westporter Lucia Palmieri has been in the spotlight for many achievements over her young years—most recently as an acclaimed soprano opera singer. Now she can add “hero” to the list.WestportNow.com Image
Lucia Palmieri: in new role: “hero.” Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Thursday morning’s sudden snowstorm found Palmieri, 34, heading home along the Hutchinson River Parkway in Scarsdale, N.Y. from a 12-hour shift helping out a friend at her all-night business in Queens.

It was about 9 a.m. and Palmieri, who had just made a quick stop to pick up some bagels, was behind a Nissan Pathfinder that suddenly began “fishtailing” on the icy roadway.

Palmieri, a 1993 Staples graduate, watched in horror as the car slammed into and over a guardrail, and then slid down a 30-foot embankment, ending up partially submerged in a lake.

Biggest and Brightest

WestportNow.com Image
Friday night’s full moon, as seen from Westport’s Compo Beach, was said to be the biggest and brightest full moon of the entire year. As the first full moon of 2010, it is also known as the wolf moon from days long ago when hungry wolves howled at the full moon on cold winter nights. It was the biggest and brightest because this moon’s path around the earth made it about 14 percent wider and 30 percent brighter than lesser full moons of the year, according to Spaceweather.com.
