Concerned About Seagulls at Compo

To the Editor:

I am very concerned about the seagulls at Compo Beach. Every time I go there I see at least one or two kids throwing large rocks at the gulls.

The last time I was there, two boys were throwing big rocks at circling gulls. I happen to have been with wildlife rehabilitator, Dara Reid She went over to them and pointed out that the birds have feelings and a right to be at the beach.

She also told them that it is illegal to throw rocks at birds and that they are protected by law.

I talked with her and asked her how often she sees injured gulls at her wildlife center (Wildlife in Crisis) in Weston. She told me that she gets hundreds of gulls per year, and about 50 percent of them have been abused.

It makes no sense that she has to take in and treat birds that have been intentionally injured by kids while their parents watch from their beach blanket.  Sometimes the parents even encourage their kids to be cruel to the animals.

The beach is a natural habitat of the gulls and when we go there we are invading their home. Rather than hurting the gulls, adults and children should observe them and enjoy their unusual communication behavior.

They will realize that gulls aren’t just things that can fly but interesting creatures that we are lucky to have.

Comings and Goings: Dunkin’ Out, Starbucks In at Stop & Shop

WestportNow.com Image
Shoppers at Westport’s Stop & Shop will soon have a new coffee counter to get a quick caffeine hit while shopping. The Boston Globe reported that in the latest twist in New England’s coffee wars, Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop is dropping Dunkin’ Donuts stores from inside 130 supermarkets and is replacing them with rival java giant Starbucks. It is an extension of an existing relationship. Starbucks has 93 coffee stands operating inside Stop & Shop and its sister grocery chain Giant Food, the newspaper said. A Westport Stop & Shop official said he expects the Starbucks to open in September. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Landon Asks New Students to Register Early

Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon today urged families moving to Westport for the new school year and parents of entering kindergartners or children transferring from private schools to register their children as soon as possible,

“Please don’t wait until the last minute,” Landon said in a statement. “Let us know now that you are here so we may plan for the optimal education for your youngsters.”

Those who are not sure of their district elementary or middle school can find the information on the school district Web site or call the superintendent’s office, (203)341-1026.

The superintendent said he monitors enrollment closely during the summer to avoid September surprises that could lead to excessively large class sizes or the need to divide a class after school has started.

Comings and Goings: Tiburon Gone?

WestportNow.com Image
It’s been at least three weeks since the Tiburon Restaurant, successor since February to the landmark Three Bears Restaurant (See WestportNow Feb. 2, 2009), has been open for business. A message tells callers that the restaurant at the intersection of Newtown Turnpike and Wilton Road was closed “for renovations.” Those in the neighborhood said they had not seen any work under way and they assumed it was closed for good. Multiple signs posted on the door say there is dish washing and/or laundry equipment inside belonging to Auto-Chlor system with a phone number. The supplier said he cannot find the restaurant owner and fears his equipment might be seized. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
