Westporter Brooks Jones, Producer, Dies at 73

David Brooks Jones, a producer and director who rejected Broadway to devote himself to regional theater, including starting and directing Pepsico Summerfare at the State University of New York at Purchase, died on July 15 at his Compo Mill home in Westport, The New York Times reported in its Monday edition. He was 73.

The cause was heart failure, his sister, Gloria Jones Borden, said, according to the newspaper.

The university provided 500 acres of lawns and gardens and four indoor theaters to Summerfare, and Pepsico contributed money (ultimately millions of dollars). But it was Jones who provided vision and direction for a 1980s summertime cultural happening that lasted a decade — and considerably longer in the memory of many visitors, the Times said.

He attracted major acts, from Henny Youngman to the Royal Hanneford Circus to the Feld Ballet, but it was his exuberant mix-and-match, something-for-everyone sensibility that defined the festival, the newspaper said.

The man, identified as Reed M. Benson of West Haven, became involved in a dispute on Friday at Westport National Bank, 1495 Post Road East near Maple Avenue North, investigators said. He vowed to return today. When he did before the bank’s opening, bank employees called police.

As an officer sought to question him, he took off in his car at a high rate of speed toward Fairfield. A few moments later, state police received calls that his car was spotted traveling erratically at a high rate of speed on I-95 southbound.

Meantime, Westport police received a call from someone saying that the driver of a car matching the description of the wanted vehicle had tossed what appeared to be a handgun out a window near Sasco Creek at the Westport-Fairfield town line.

I’m Chadwick and I Have a Forever Family

husky/boxer/shepherd mix Chadwick needs a home
Hi, I’m Chadwick! Westport Animal Control

WestportNow.com Image
Chadwick. Westport Animal Control

Chadwick is a mix of many breeds (husky/boxer/shepherd) but they all have come together in a lovely combination. Whatever his lineage, Chadwick is one swell dog and is approximately four years old. The gray on his face is part of his handsome merle coloring. He has a wonderful calm and gentle temperament. He walks very well on a leash, knows his basic commands, and gives paw on both the left and right side. The Westport Animal Control officers made quite a few calls to Animal Controls in the area to make sure nobody was missing this fine fellow. How he ended up roaming in Westport is a mystery, but what is not a mystery is how much you will love him at your first meeting. He is a buddy dog, one that will walk with you with a clink of the leash, keep your feet warm at night, and give you a paw of support when you need it. Please call Westport Animal Control at (203)341-5076 to set up a time to meet Chadwick and get ready to lose your heart.
