Peace Vigil in Fourth Year

WestportNow.com Image
In June 2005, Westporters Mary and Howard Maynard and Estelle and Manny Margolis decided it was time to protest the war in Iraq that had at that time already resulted in more than 1,000 deaths and serious injuries to American troops. They said they could not think of a better way to “Support our Troops” than to get them out of harm’s way and bring them home. So the peace vigil on the Ruth Steinkraus Cohen Bridge in Westport’s center started on June 11, 2005. Since then, many others have joined the protest every Saturday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m., rain or shine. Many passing motorists respond with encouraging horn blowing and waves while those in disagreement often do so with an upraised finger. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Larry Untermeyer for WestportNow.com

Talking Baseball at the Senior Center

Westporter Jeff White, an adviser to the Boston Red Sox, former chief financial officer of Major League Baseball and head of Westport Little League, talked about the business of baseball today at the Westport Center for Senior Activities. White, who wears his 2004 Red Sox World Series ring on his right hand, said the Red Sox will distribute their 2007 World Series rings on Monday. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) WestportNow.com photo

I’m Moe and I Have a Home

Lab mix Moe needs a forever home
Hi, I’m Moe! Connecticut Humane Society

Moe arrived at the Connecticut Humane Society anxious and displaced, pressing himself against the back wall of the kennel. With a bit of love his true personality has come out ... a little more each day, and now he sits near the front of his kennel legs folded watching the world go by and happily hoping the next person who stops in front of him will be his loving, forever owner. Moe loves to take walks, or just sit by your feet in the warmth of the sun and roll over for a belly rub. A CHS volunteer says of Moe, “I am so happy that Moe is regaining his capacity for trust. He has a smile now and in his eyes I see great dignity. I will say with unconditional honesty I will be truly jealous of the family that gets to adopt him.” Moe is a one year old black and white Labrador Mix. He is neutered and up to date on all his shots. Come by and see for yourself how really wonderful Moe is. The Connecticut Humane Society, 455 Post Road East, Westport, 203-227-4137.

Free Swim Lessons Offered at Sherwood Island

Gov. M. Jodi Rell announced today that the state is teaming up with the Connecticut Alliance of YMCAs to offer free swim lessons at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport and other state parks.

Rell said the Department of Environmental Protection and the YMCAs have scheduled the lessons to kick off in some areas to coincide with Water Safety Week June 23-28.

“Free swim lessons will take place at eight YMCAs and six state parks across the state,” Rell said in a statement.

“This focus on water safety is a perfect complement to our efforts to encourage Connecticut’s families to spend more time outdoors.  We want our families to have a safe and enjoyable experience when they visit a beach or a pool.”
