I’m Chorizo and I Have a Home

Shar Pei mix Chorizo needs a home
Hi, I’m Chorizo! Connecticut Humane Society

Chorizo is a 9 year old spayed Shar Pei mix. She’s an incredibly sensitive girl who, when comfortable, is just the sweetest thing! Children are too active for her preference, so Chorizo should be placed in a home with calm children, or older children. She is already housebroken and well trained! She’s a somewhat active dog who enjoys walks and may be ok with other animals. She’s part licking machine, so be prepared for lots of kisses when Chorizo is around. If you think you can give this lovely pup the TLC that she so deserves, come to meet her at the Westport branch of the CT Humane Society!

Volunteer Comments about Chorizo:
“I have a special bond with Chorizo because when she came to the shelter I made a promise to her that she would improve. She seemed so shy and wary of strangers.  She has come out of her shell since then and is keen to curl up and push into you to show her appreciation and affection. Chorizo has an expressive face and is not stingy dispensing warmth and kisses. She is eager and curious and sometimes I feel that she might wish she could climb trees instead of just looking up at them! She leash-walks very nicely and has been friendly to other dogs in the shelter.”

Westporters Pay Tribute to Norwalk Officer

Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff and Police Chief Alfred Fiore led numerous Westport emergency workers today at the funeral of Norwalk Police Officer Matthew Morelli who once volunteered for Westport’s Emergency Medical Service.

They were among hundreds of police and other emergency personnel from the region and beyond who joined family, friends, and state dignitaries at Norwalk’s St. Matthew’s Church and later walked to nearby St. John’s Cemetery. Morelli, 38, a former Marine, was buried with full police and military honors.

The 11-year veteran of the Norwalk department died early Friday morning after radioing that he was investigating suspicious activity at a South Norwalk church parking lot. On Tuesday, Norwalk police said it appeared Morelli committed suicide. (See WestportNow March 25, 2008)

Joseloff and Fiore were joined by Deputy Chiefs Dale Call and Gary Golas as well as a number of Westport police officers and EMS personnel and volunteers. Morelli, who grew up in Weston, volunteered with Westport EMS from 1996 to 2001.

Shays Addresses Y’s Men

Congressman Christopher Shays addressed today’s meeting of the Y’s Men of Westport Weston and discussed matters of current interest including the Iraq War. Shays, who just returned from another visit to Iraq, repeated that if he had known then what he now knows regarding the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, he would have cast his vote against going to war. He said, however, that he does not feel that the United States can now recall its troops until the government in Iraq is stabilized and its army can successfully defend the country. “Meet the Next President of the United States”

WestportNow.com Image
Kristan Peters-Hamlin (l) introduces Hillary Rodham Clinton tonight to her daughter Brittany, 14, at a fund-raiser her family hosted at their home on Westport’s Compo Parkway. Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, a Yale Law School classmate of Clinton’s, listens. Peters-Hamlin said Clinton’s candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination was an inspiration for little girls and women around the nation. She recalled for the crowd a story of how when Brittany was 5 years old, she saw a “learning placemat” that had all the presidents of the United States pictured and asked why, if half the nation was female, there were no women presidents. Her mother explained why, and Brittany did not feel that was fair. Hamlin-Peters promised that in both her lifetime and Brittany’s, that would change. Tonight, 10 years later, her mother introduced Brittany to Clinton and told her daughter: “I told you so, Brittany. Meet the next president of the United States of America—a woman!” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Randy Ramirez for WestportNow.com

Board of Finance Cuts $250,000 from Education Budget

The Westport Board of Finance tonight cut $250,000 from the proposed 2008-09 school operating budget.

The 4-2 vote was on party lines with the four Democrats in favor and two Republicans, Charles Haberstroh and Ed Iannone, opposed. The third Republican member, Avi Kaner, was absent.

The cut brings the education proposal to $94 million, which is a 5.7 percent increase over the current budget. The Board of Education had proposed a $94.3 million 2008-09 operating budget, which is a 6.02 percent increase over the current budget.

The finance board cut a nominal $4,500 from the proposed municipal budget of $59.5 million to take into account a reduced computer request in the Parks and Recreation Department budget.

Police Chief: “High Probability” Officer’s Wound Self-Inflicted

Norwalk Police Chief Harry Rilling said today there was a “high degree of probability” that Officer Matthew Morelli shot himself early Friday morning in a South Norwalk parking lot, touching off an intensive manhunt.WestportNow.com Image
Norwalk Police Chief Harry Rilling (at podium) and Mayor Richard Moccia (r) address today’s news conference about Officer Matthew Morelli’s death. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

“At this particular moment, the general consensus is that there is a high degree of probability that the fatal wound suffered by Officer Morelli was self-inflicted,” Rilling told a news conference at Norwalk police headquarters.

Rilling added: “Having said that, we are not at a point where can make a 100 percent conclusion in that regard. There are still a few things that need to happen before we can get to that point.”

Following the shooting, Norwalk police officers as well as those from surrounding towns, including Westport, responded to the South Norwalk church parking lot where Morelli, 38, had radioed he was investigating some suspicious activity. (See WestportNow March 21, 2008)
