On arrival, firefighters found a two-vehicle accident that took out about 30 feet of guard rail which prevented the cars from plunging down a steep embankment, he said.

Winter Weather Advisory in Effect

The winter weather advisory is now in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y.

Steady light freezing rain, freezing drizzle, and occasional sleet was winding down as of 11:30 p.m., an advisory said.

Another area of light showers of snow and sleet over central Pennsylvania should overspread the New York City metropolitan area, Long Island, and coastal Connecticut after midnight with additional accumulation of less than an inch expected.

This plus icing from the earlier freezing rain should make for continued hazardous travel conditions overnight.

“Our offices on Church Lane were great and we will miss having the luxury of so much space. However, we felt we had an obligation to our membership to be fiscally responsible,” said Paul Gehr, chamber vice chairman. “We have found a location that meets our space and financial needs.”

The Town Clerk’s property transfers issued last week showed that the chamber sold its building at 60 Church Lane to Braidmax LLC for $1,275,000.

“One comment we often received from visitors was that our offices on Church Lane had poor parking,” said Richard Gordon, board chair.

31 Woody Lane Will Survive

WestportNow.com Image
WestportNow learned today that the demolition of a segment of 31 Woody Lane has ended and that the historic barn structure of the house will be retained and restored. Its owner, Ashley Schapiro of Westport-based Milton Development, said the barn will be incorporated into the construction of a new home on that property. Schapiro said that “it was our decision from day one to save the barn—it works with the overall design that will become an overall award-winning colonial style structure.”  He added that the barn will become the living room for the new house and it will retain its historical internal format. The circa 1900-built house was the WestrportNow Teardown of the Day on Oct. 31, 2007 and its partial demolition was featured on WestportNow on Wednesday. The property ownership changed hands in November at $1,330,000. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Winter Storm Warning Issued

The National Weather Service in Upton, N.Y. has issued a winter storm warning for Westport and area from 5 a.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday.

Light snow will begin toward the morning commute from west to east, an advisory said. The snow will become moderate in intensity by mid-morning
and continue through mid afternoon. The snow will change over to sleet and freezing rain late Friday afternoon before tapering off Friday night.

Snow accumulations of 3 to 7 inches are expected Friday with an additional ice accumulation of a quarter inch on top of the snow Friday evening. This will create treacherous conditions.

A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel hazardous.
