Westport Grand List Up 1.95 Percent

Westport’s Grand List, the listing of all taxable properties located within the town on Oct.  1, 2007, increased approximately $210 million or about 1.95 percent, Tax Assessor Paul Friia said today.

The $10.6 billion list, which was signed today, is used to determine the tax rate for the 2008-09 fiscal year, which starts July 1.

The list is subject to changes from the Board of Assessment Appeals and other adjustments, Fria said in a letter to First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff.

Friia said the majority of the increase is in real estate and pertains to new construction, additions, and renovations of residential homes.

Blumenthal Praises Decision on Westport CL&P Billing Dispute

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal today praised a final Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC) decision that removes a provision that would have required the Town of Westport to fully pay a disputed $450,000 electric bill.

Instead, the decision enables Westport to fight the disputed costs, imposed after Connecticut Light & Power Company (CL&P) erroneously neglected to bill the town earlier, according to a news release from Blumenthal’s office.

“I am delighted that the DPUC, at my request, removed from its final decision a requirement that Westport pay a bloated $450,000 CL&P bill that resulted from the company’s failure to properly bill the Westport schools for months,” he said.

In his statement, Blumenthal welcomed the DPUC decision that requires strong continued scrutiny of CL&P’s meter testing and billing practices as well as an independent monitor to verify the company’s testing accuracy.

Joseloff Vows Threatening Behavior Won’t Be Tolerated

A Westport Town Hall incident in which a resident yelled obscenities during a public meeting and acted “in a threatening manner” brought a vow today from First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff that such behavior won’t be tolerated.

In a memo to department heads and chairs of boards and commissions, Joseloff said the incident occurred Tuesday night during a Zoning Board of Appeals meeting and resulted in police being called.

The first selectman gave no details of the incident and the person involved was not identified.

Joseloff said he has conferred with police officials and security measures for Town Hall meetings are under review.

I’m Brownie and I Have a Family

hound mix Brownie needs a home
Hi, I’m Brownie! Connecticut Humane Society

Brownie is an adult hound mix with an interesting story. He wandered into someone’s back yard a while back. She adopted him out to a friend and, within a few months, Brownie ended up back in her yard! He was picked up by animal control and they adopted him out, and again, several months later, Brownie ended up back in the same yard! He’s just looking for his forever home (preferably with a fenced yard!) He must be placed in an adult home only but he is already housebroken and seems to get along with other dogs. He is not yet trained but eager to learn. If you think Brownie would make a great companion for you, come to meet him at the CT Humane Society in Westport at 455 Post Road East or call 203-227-4137 for more information!

Going Down: 167 Cross Highway

WestportNow.com Image
The house at 167 Cross Highway came down today. Part of the 5,038 square-foot house was built in 1790. The house and two other buildings sit on a 7.53-acre parcel. It changed hands in August, 2007 for $5 million when it was purchased from the songwriting/production team of Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson. It was the WestportNow Teardown of the Day on Aug. 5, 2007. As the demolition proceeded, Doug Bernstein (l), the new owner of the property, chatted with Westporter Susan Malloy whose parents Aaron and Clara Rabinowitz owned the house and property her family referred to as “Robin’s Nest” from 1937 to 1973.  Asked today how she felt about seeing her childhood home being demolished, Malloy said she thought a lot about it Sunday night and came to the realization that it was in poor condition, could not be renovated and decided to go there this morning to say goodbye. “I made my peace with the fact that it is being demolished” she added, “even though I cannot get used to those machines ripping into a house.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Story and photo by Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

The jury returned a verdict of guilty on all charges against all defendants contained in a 16-count superseding indictment stemming from a fraudulent scheme to manipulate AIG’s financial statements, the department said.

Robert Graham, 59, of Westport, a Gen Re senior vice president and assistant general counsel employed by Gen Re from about 1986 through October 2005, was found guilty on charges of conspiracy, securities fraud, false statements to the SEC, and mail fraud, a news release said.

Graham served as a Republican member of the Westport Planning and Zoning Commission from 1995 to 1999 and was on the Board of Finance from 1999 to 2003.
