A box truck apparently sheared off its top today under the railroad overpass on Saugatuck Avenue in Westport and kept on going.

Firefighters responded to a report of a hazardous condition at the overpass just before 1 p.m., said Assistant Chief Robert Kepchar.

Westport police were reporting a large section of metal was stuck under the bridge and obstructing traffic, he said.

“Arriving units found that a large top section of a box truck had been sheared off by the underside of the bridge,” Kepchar said.

Michael was born on April 9, 1912, at home in Westport. His parents were Serafina Poproska and Thomas Horelick, immigrants from Bielorussia, who met in Westport, and married in Assumption Church in 1910.

Michael graduated from the “old” Staples on Riverside Avenue in 1930. He was a first-rate athlete and turned down several offers of college athletic scholarships to study electrical engineering at Pratt institute.

Michael was employed for almost 60 years by the Dorr Company of Westport (later Dorr-Oliver Laboratories of Stamford) as shop superintendent. He continued his athletic activities all his life: he was a Compo Beach lifeguard in the 1920s and 30s and played baseball and basketball in various Westport leagues.

Cartoon Gift

WestportNow.com Image
The Westport Historical Society today presented First Selectman Gordon Joseloff with a framed comic strip to commemorate the current exhibit at the Society called “A Cartoon Legacy.” The Hi and Lois cartoon done in 1999 by Brian and Greg Walked and illustrated by Chance Browne celebrates the fact that a newspaper “requires no hardware, no software, no download time.” The Society thought Joseloff, a longtime journalist and technology buff, would enjoy the panel. Presenting the gift were Susan Gold (l), WHS executive director, and Ellen Naftalin, a member of the WHS Exhibit Committee. The exhibit runs through Jan. 4.
