“He’s Always There”

WestportNow.com Image
Jay Quann Mckinney (l), 16, of Norwalk was a special guest of Westport Rotary Club member Dr. Irwin Lebish of Westport today at the club’s weekly meeting at the Inn at Longshore. Lebish has been mentoring the Briggs High School student for 11 years, bringing stability to his turbulent life. “He’s always been there for me whenever I needed him,” the 11th grader said. Speakers from the Norwalk school system said there is a desperate need for mentors and appealed to Westporters to give an hour a week to make a difference in a youngster’s life.  (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

Jonathan Cunitz Named as RTM District 4 Representative

Members of Westport’s Representative Town Meeting (RTM) District 4 today selected Jonathan A. Cunitz to fill a vacancy in the District.

Members Gene Seidman, Elizabeth Milwe, and Jeffrey Wieser acted under a Town Charter provision because not enough candidates filed to appear on the ballot in the Nov. 6 election.

Cunitz, who holds a doctorate and master degrees from Harvard Business School, is a consultant in areas of financial management, economics, accounting, and information systems. A 33-year Westport resident, he served as an elected member of the Zoning Board of Appeals from 1997 to 2001.

Only one other candidate, Matt Murray, appeared at today’s District meeting at Town Hall.

Talking Transportation: Fixing the Railroad Parking Mess

By Jim Cameron

Special to WestportNow

With new rail cars coming in 2009, now’s the time to plan for additional riders by giving them a place to park at nearby stations. As all commuters know, station parking today is a nightmare.

talkingtransportation250.jpg

Many stations have a four- or five-year wait for annual permits, which can cost up to $650; and day-parking is expensive, if you can find it.

As I’ve explained before, parking at most rail stations is owned by the Connecticut Department of Transportation, but administered by the local towns. That’s why we’ve ended up with a crazy quilt of rules and pricing.

Take Rowayton for example. Every year annual permits are handed out on a first-come, first served basis one hectic Saturday morning in May. Nobody is “grandfathered-in.”

Sunday NY Times Features WN’s Dave Matlow

The Sunday New York Times Connecticut section features a front-page story about WestportNow photographer Dave Matlow.WestportNow.com Image
Dave Matlow: “Weegee of Westport” WN file photo

Written by columnist Gerri Hirshey, the story headlined “House Demolition? Fire? He’ll Be There, With Camera” spotlights Matlow’s work for WestportNow ranging from “Teardown of the Day” to fires, accidents, and other Westport happenings.

The story, with a picture of Matlow at the scene of a teardown, notes that a friend once referred to him as the “Weegee of Westport,” alluding to Matlow’s fascination with the New York City photographer who chronicled the city’s murder and mayhem in the 1930s and ‘40s.

Matlow’s work depicting Westport’s changing real estate scene will be the subject of a Westport Historical Society exhibit “Westport Preserved/Westport Lost” opening Jan. 20. He is a former president of the Society.
