Metro-North Abruptly Cancels Platform Changes

UPDATE Less than 24 hours after announcing platform changes affecting riders on Metro-North’s New Haven Line beginning Monday, the railroad today abruptly canceled the changes. (See WestportNow Nov. 29, 2007)

Metro-North gave no reason for the about-face, but Gov. M. Jodi Rell said in a statement a short time later that she had stepped in and ordered the reversal. She also criticized her Department of Transportation for its handling of the matter.

“The original plan was simply unacceptable to commuters and to me,” Rell said.

There was intense criticism from commuter advocates following Thursday’s announcement that all morning rush-hour trains to New York at 12 New Haven Line stations will arrive on the opposite track while overhead catenary wires are upgraded.

News-12’s Appleby: Concerned About Customized News Image
Tom Appleby, news director of Cablevision News-12 Connecticut, told the Y’s Men of Westport Weston today that he is concerned about new technologies that allow for customizing news for consumers. He said computer or telephone users can program in selections—“if you’re a Red Sox fan, you don’t have to hear about the Yankees or Mets”—but that could mean they also won’t get important international or national news. Westport Student Names a Desktop Supercomputer

What the University of Maryland says is the next big leap in advanced computing technology just got a new name, thanks to a 21-year-old college student from Westport.

The University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering said the winning entry for its Supercomputer Naming Contest is “ParaLeap,” submitted by Jaryd Malbin, a student from Westport attending Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa.

The university launched the contest in June in conjunction with an announcement of the creation of a new desktop supercomputing prototype developed by Uzi Vishkin, a computer engineering processor.

Capable of computing speeds 100 times faster than current desktops, Vishkin’s technology is based on parallel processing on a single chip which could launch a new era of general use, desktop supercomputing, the university said.

Police:  Latest “Click It or Ticket” Campaign Effective

Their latest “Click It or Ticket” campaign to promote seat belt use appeared to be a success, according to Westport police.

The department issued 55 infractions for seat belt violations during the Nov. 12-Nov. 25 campaign, it said. “More importantly, an increased usage of seat belts was observed,” said Lt. Thomas P. Casimiro II in a statement.

On Nov. 5, a survey of 200 drivers on Weston Road showed 80 percent were belted, he said. On Nov. 26 at the same time and location, the number had improved to 95 percent.

“Hopefully, the motoring public is getting the message that seat belts save lives,” Casimiro said.
