Talking Transportation: Crunch Time for Metro-North

By Jim Cameron

Special to WestportNow

Fresh and rested from their summer vacations, commuters are in for a rude surprise when they board Metro-North trains again: more riders, more overcrowding and more problems finding a seat.

talkingtransportation250.jpg

Yes, better times are ahead. The new M8 cars are being designed and built, but it won’t be until August 2009 that even a prototype for the new cars is delivered for testing. So figure on 2010 before we commuters will actually ride in one.

Meantime, ridership on Metro-North continues to climb. It’s up 5 percent again this year with no sign of it leveling off anytime soon given gas prices. And those additional passengers are scrambling for seats on a dwindling number of rail cars.

Recent reports from Metro-North show only eight trains out of 10 with enough cars, down from nine trains out of 10 last summer.

Shays: Surge Working in Iraq But Withdrawal Timeline Needed

WestportNow.com Image
Rep. Christopher Shays, R-4, told the Westport Sunrise Rotary Club today that “the surge is working” in Iraq but “what is missing is the political piece.” He said the United States needs a timeline to disengage in Iraq but one that does not “turn over” the country to the Iranians. He also predicted that “the fear of Iran is going to push the Arab community closer to Israel.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Larry Untermeyer for WestportNow.com

Committee Recommends King’s Highway Open on Schedule

By Linda Alvkall

UPDATE  The Special King’s Highway Elementary School Maintenance Committee tonight voted unanimously to recommend that the school open next week as scheduled after investigating and addressing air quality issues that some parents said made their children sick.

The vote, involving parents, town volunteers with building maintenance expertise, school officials, teacher union representatives, and health district officials, capped a three-week marathon effort to remediate mold and other air quality issues at the school.

Gavin Anderson, committee chair, said remediation of the gymnasium, where mold had been found behind the walls, would be completed this week.

He said it is likely the gym will be ready for school opening with perhaps a plywood wall closing off the infected area but that two modular classrooms still with problems should remain closed.
