Wedding Ring Lost and Found at Compo Beach

A gold bit of history was lost—and found—at Westport’s Compo Beach Sunday.

Amid the sun and innocent frolicking on a glorious summer’s day, someone lost a golden men’s wedding band with two inscriptions, one of them dating back to the 1960s.

“I don’t know what the story is with this ring, I just know a lot of things, toys, towels, shoes are lost at the beach,” said Brendon Kelley, Westport’s waterfront director.

“We also have a box for more valuable things, cellphones, sunglasses, wallets. If we find a wallet we’ll announce it over the PA.”

Fire Department Shuts Down Main Street Office Water Leak

Westport firefighters today shut down a water leak in a Main Street office building after it touched off an automatic fire alarm.

Assistant Chief Robert Kepchar said the department responded to a 5:07 a.m. alarm at 225 Main St. and upon arrival, firefighters found water coming from a second floor office and two first floor offices.

They immediately accessed the first floor office and found water pouring from the ceiling tiles in the rear of the office space. The domestic water supply was shut down and firefighters gained access to the affected office spaces with the help of the building owner.

The source of the problem was determined to be a broken water line to a sink in a second floor office.

Talking Transportation: Bridge Inspections

By Jim Cameron

Special to WestportNow

In June of 1983, a 100-foot section of the Mianus River Bridge in Greenwich collapsed. Three people were killed, three others injured and a major stretch of I-95 was left in turmoil for six months during reconstruction.

talkingtransportation250.jpg

The engineering reasons for the collapse were simple—rust and corrosion.  But the National Transportation Safety Board investigation of the collapse also blamed inadequate inspections by the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CDOT).

In the early 1980s, the state was in financial difficulty. Budgets for state agencies were being cut, and so were corners. CDOT had only 12 inspectors on staff for more than 5.000 bridges. Had Mianus been inspected more often and more diligently, perhaps that tragedy would have been averted.

Fast forward to 2007. State coffers are flush with cash. In fact, we have a surplus of more than a $900 million. And transportation is a top priority for Hartford. Or so we thought.

Firefighters Rescue Dog Trapped Overnight in Well

Hours of anxiety over a missing Dachshund ended happily early today after Westport firefighters rescued the animal from an abandoned well where it had been trapped overnight.WestportNow.com Image

The dog’s owner, Pam Nistico, said she had walked 1-year-old Brody late Saturday night and then returned to her home on the grounds of her family’s Red Barn Restaurant, 292 Wilton Road. When she put him down, Brody playfully chased after the family cat.

After a while, Nistico became concerned when she could not find Brody. She and her daughter, Desiree, 19, and a friend searched frantically on nearby streets.

They called Westport police for help and even spotted a state trooper on the nearby Merritt Parkway where he had stopped a speeder and asked if he had seen the dog. The trooper used his flashlight to look into the woods off the parkway. But Brody was nowhere to be found.
