I-95 Tanker Truck Crash in Fairfield Stalls Westport Traffic

Traffic along Westport’s Post Road East came to a standstill today following an accident involving a tanker truck and a pickup that shut down Interstate 95 in both directions between exits 21 and 22 in Fairfield.WestportNow.com Image

Westport firefighters assisted Fairfield fire units at the scene of the accident shortly after 9 a.m. State Police ordered the highway closed after fuel from the tanker spilled on the roadway.

Southbound I-95 was reopened about an hour later, officials said, but it was about 12:30 p.m. before northbound lanes were opened. Northbound traffic was backed-up to Exit 18 in Westport, and many trucks opted for Post Road East in Westport to get around the accident scene.

One report said the accident was touched off when a car rolled over the embankment off the highway’s northbound lane near Mill Plain Road. The pickup and the tanker truck then collided, a witness said.

Gerald Ford: the Westport Connections

Gerald R. Ford, who died Tuesday night at the age of 93 at his California home, did not visit Westport as president. But he did come here as a congressman for a fund-raising dinner and dance in 1966, according to his presidential library papers.WestportNow.com Image

He also had an indirect connection with Westport—it was a Westport resident, William J. Brink, who wrote the famous 1975 New York Daily News headline: “FORD TO CITY: DROP DEAD.” Brink, a former managing editor of the newspaper, died last year at the age of 89 (See WestportNow July 1, 2005).

Ford, who attended Yale Law School and made several visits to Connecticut as president and in later years, came to Westport on June 25, 1966, as House minority leader. He attended a fund-raiser for Abner W. Sibal, a former Republican congressman from Norwalk.

Westport newspapers reported the event was at Longshore Club Park and among those attending was Westporter John Boyd, who recently celebrated his 90th birthday here. Earlier in the day, Ford had attended the 4th Congressional District GOP convention in Bridgeport.

A blue tarp was placed today on the Paul Rudolph-designed house at 16 Minute Man Hill in Westport.

Stamford Superior Court Judge Taggart D. Adams ordered on Friday that no further demolition be done to the house until court hearings on a temporary injunction could be completed (See WestportNow Dec. 22).

The Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, which is seeking the injunction, had asked for coverage on the roof, which had been removed, so the house could be protected from the elements. But the judge did not include it in his order. There were heavy rains Friday night and Monday night.

Since the court hearing, the subject of a tarp had been discussed in numerous e-mail correspondences, said Philip Walker, attorney representing the trust.

Seat Belts, Air Bags Save Two in I-95 Crash

Westport fire officials are crediting use of seat belts and side impact air bags with preventing serious injury to two Long Island residents today after their car rolled over several times, hit a tree, and ended up in a marsh on I-95 in Westport.

The 7:26 a.m. accident occurred in the southbound lanes of the highway between exits 17 and 18, according to Assistant Chief William Dingee.

First arriving units found a car down an embankment and into a marsh, he said. Both occupants were out of the car and were being tended to by two emergency medical technicians from a passing AMR ambulance, he said.

The two were returning home to Long Island after spending the holidays with family in the Boston area, Dingee said.
