Flash Flood Warning Issued

The National Weather Service today issued a flash flood warning for the Westport area until 10:45 a.m.

It said persistent heavy rains have been falling for the past couple of hours and more rain is anticipated through late morning.

An advisory urged motorists not to drive into areas where the water covers the roadway. The water depth may be too great to allow your car to cross safely. Move to higher ground.

A flash flood warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. Residents living along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property. Do not attempt to cross swiftly flowing waters or waters of unknown depth by foot or by automobile.

High Wind Warning, Flood Watch in Effect for Saturday

The National Weather Service this afternoon issued a high wind warning and flood watch for Westport and the tri-state area.

The high wind warning is in effect from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday while the flood watch is in effect for Saturday morning through afternoon.

An advisory said although rain is forecast to develop and spread northeast across the region before midnight, heavy rain is forecast to occur
from around 6 a.m. until around 4 p.m. from southwest to northeast. Two to 3 inches of rain is forecast to occur during this time.

Heavy rain will combine with strong and gusty southeast winds causing widespread urban flooding, including small stream and river flooding. Leaves falling off trees will block drains causing significant ponding of water in normal poor drainage areas, the advisory said.

National Weather Service Issues Storm Advisory

The National Weather Service today issued an an advisory warning of a significant storm with high winds and heavy rain moving into the Westport and tri-state area late tonight into Saturday.

It said low pressure moving into the central Appalachians tonight will deepen rapidly on Saturday. Southeasterly winds ahead of the low will increase as the low intensifies, possibly gusting 35 to 45 mph for a short period Saturday morning and early Saturday afternoon.

Winds gusting to 45 mph are also expected behind the system. These strong winds will continue overnight on Saturday and through the day on Sunday, the advisory said.

With the combination of heavy rains saturating the ground and the highs winds there is a possibility of downed trees and power lines. High profile vehicles will be susceptible to cross winds on bridges and over passes, the advisory said.

I'm Toby and I need a new home
Hi, I’m Toby! Connecticut Human Society

So, you’re looking for a special dog to take with you for long walks at the beach or in the park. Well, look no further. Hi, I’m Toby, a 1 ½-year-old, altered male chocolate lab, and you can find me at the Connecticut Humane Society (455 Post Road East, Westport (203) 227-4137). My previous owner didn’t have time to give me all the attention and exercise that I dog like me needs. That’s a real shame because I’m very smart and have been doing very well with my training at the Humane Society. So, their loss could be your gain! I’m a very sweet boy and would love to meet you. Please stop by THIS WEEK to meet me, Toby, the chocolate lab of your dreams.

Staples Boys Soccer Edges McMahon 1-0

A pesky Brien McMahon team nipped at Staples’ heels today, but a second-half goal propelled the Wreckers to a 1-0 home victory.

The win raises the boys soccer team’s record to 12-1-2, good for first place in the FCIAC. More importantly, it clinches one of four spots in the FCIAC tournament, which begins next Wednesday. One regular season game remains: Monday, 3 p.m. vs. Danbury in Westport.

The lone goal was a pretty one. In the 50th minute Preston Hirten won a hard tackle at midfield. He fed Matt Lamb, with his back to the goal in the center circle. The tri-captain turned 180 degrees, and found Russell Oost-Lievenze. The junior blazed forward, beating both a defender and the keeper, before finishing low and hard.

“We needed a game like this,” said head coach Dan Woog. “We had to be tested, to see what it’s like to dig deep and win a 1-goal game. This was an important test for us—and it’s nice to see we passed the test.”

Hi, I’m Buddy! (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Connecticut Human Society

Hi, I’m Buddy, a 1-year-old, altered male, German shepherd mix.  I’m the cutest, don’t you think. My name is perfect for me as I just long to be your best “buddy”. You can find me at the Connecticut Humane Society (455 Post Road East, Westport, (203) 227-4137). I was surrendered at such a young age because I wouldn’t stay in the yard. I have to wonder how many dogs would stay in their yard by themselves. I think a fenced-in yard would do the trick. I’m really great on a leash so I would be a great walking “buddy” too. Oh, I get well with other dogs too so I could be your dog’s “buddy”.  So remember my name BUDDY, and please stop by to say hello to your new best BUDDY!!!
