William “Bill” Eugene Surette of Westport died March 17 in his cherished Westport home where he resided for more than 50 years. He was 87.
He was born June 14, 1929 In Evanston, Illinois, the only child of William and Helen (Briggs) Surette. He married Charlene (Burke) Surette on June 30, 1962.
He was a 1951 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a veteran who served honorably as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.
A brilliant mind, he has left lasting contributions in the field of engineering and science, including pioneering work in the fields of global position systems, missile technologies and satellite communications.
His genius was also generously shared with his children during late night help with countless school projects over many years.
He loved spending time with family, attending church functions, volunteering, building/repairing just about anything, computers, and photography.

He is survived by his wife Charlene, sons William E. “Skip” (Vesna) Surette III of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Joseph “Cappy” (Courtney) Surette of Windermere, Florida, daughter Mary Therese Surette of Westport, grandchildren, Katie Burke Surette, Lauren Anne Surette, William Xavier Surette, Caroline Nina Surette, Elizabeth Grier Surette, Emily Grace Surette and Alexander Peter Surette.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, March 22 at 10 a.m. at Assumption Church, 98 Riverside Ave. Interment will follow in Assumption Cemetery, 73 Greens Farms Road.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his name may be left to The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675, or at http://www.woundedwarriorproject.org in honor of our nation’s veterans.
