Anthony “Tony” P. Saponare, a lifelong Westport resident, died April 17 at home. He was 78.
Born in Norwalk on May 19, 1938, he was the son of the late Joseph and Anna (Izzo) Saponare. He was a 1956 graduate of Staples High School.
He worked at Birchwood Country Club in Westport as a greens keeper for over 30 years.
He was an avid Yankee and Giants fan and knew every statistic there was to know in baseball trivia.
Although he never learned to drive, Westporters got to know Tony as he walked through town every day. He also made friends while sitting on his front porch at his Cross Street home where he lived his whole life.
To his neighbors and friends, he generously gave fresh tomatoes from his garden and to his family he always offered a bowl of minestrone soup and pasta e fagioli.
Survivors include one brother, Joseph P. Saponare and his wife Lucille of Westport, two sisters, Theresa A. Kovacs of Westport, Mary Ann Stirling and her husband William of Norwalk, as well as many nieces and nephews to whom Tony was like a second father.
The family will receive friends on Friday April 21 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road East. Friends are invited to attend a funeral on Saturday April 22 at 11 a.m., meeting directly at Assumption Church. 98 Riverside Ave., for a Mass of Christian Burial.
