It’s the theme of the Staples boys soccer season: gutting out a win. Image

Bridgeport Central was the victim today at Staples’ Loeffler Field. Andrew Puchala banged home Yousef Shahin’s corner kick in the 59th minute. The Wreckers made it stand up, for a tough 1-0 victory.

The win –- accomplished without several starters (injury) –- was a team effort.

Charlie Leonard’s attacking pressure; Diego Alanis and Michael Reid’s leadership at midfield; the defensive work of Puchala, George Kokkalis, Kenji Goto, Connor Weiler and Steven Sobel—plus excellent goalkeeping by Noah Schwaeber –- keyed the victory.

“Each game is a war,” said Dan Woog, head coach. “We keep figuring out ways to win. Our guys wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Staples, now 4-1-1, travels to Wilton on Wednesday for an important FCIAC match.
