‘Whole Area Loaded With Modern Day Slavery’

Sister Maureen Fleming, coordinator of pastoral outreach activities at Westport’s St. Luke Parish, told the Y’s Women of Westport Weston today that human trafficking of women is in Westport as well as in other areas. “The wealthier the community, the more abusive traffic that goes on,” she said. “This whole area is loaded with modern day slavery. Off of I-95, there are so many nail salons, nannies working, and massage parlors. Those who work there are often in reality slaves, not free to do what they want, working long hours in nail salons for no or little pay and then at night having to be prostitutes.” Fleming from 1995 to 2005 was director of Caroline House, an education center for low-income immigrant women and children in Bridgeport.
