Westports fire department, hit hard by recent retirements, added five new firefighters to its ranks today. First Selectwoman Diane Goss Farrell swore in the new members at fire headquarters in ceremonies also attended by their families. She welcomed the recruits into ғthe Westport family and told their relatives that the town would do everything to ensure their health and safety on the job. ԓThis is an entirely different department from when I joined, Chief Denis McCarthy told the newcomers. ԓBack then, you had to know CPR. Now you are all paramedics. Those sworn in today included Daniel Ambuso, 33, of Roxbury, Conn., Richard Calabria II, 31, of Killingworth, Conn., Earl Hill, 30, of Norwalk, Scott Martus, 26, of Cheshire, Conn., and Edward Whitbread, 29, of Stamford. Three additional openings have yet to be filled.
