UPDATE Because of the weather forecast, Westport’s fireworks display at Compo Beach scheduled for Thursday has been rescheduled to Monday, it was announced today.
“The Westport Police Athletic League (PAL) and the Westport Parks and Recreation after reviewing the projected weather forecast for Thursday July 3rd will reschedule the Fireworks Celebration to Monday July 7th at Compo Beach,” an announcement said.
“Due to the projected weather forecast, we felt that it was necessary that we reschedule the fireworks display. We hope that this notification will allow people to reschedule their plans to enjoy the celebration on Monday July 7th, 2014.”
It was the first weather-caused postponement of the Westport Independence Day fireworks since 2005. Other years have seen rain fall on the crowded beach on fireworks night but the fireworks went on as scheduled.
In 2005, the fireworks were scheduled on Friday, July 1 but were postponed until Tuesday, July 5.
Organizers said there was a reduced turnout for the postponed event as many persons had returned to work.
