Westport Police Step Up Security Measures, Emergency Team on Notice

The Westport Police Department, responding to the raising of the national threat level, has increased watch on possible strategic targets in town, Deputy Police Chief Alfred Fiore said today.

Fiore, who takes over as chief on Jan. 1, told WestportNow that he and Fire Chief Denis McCarthy participated in Mondays conference call on security matters with Gov. John Rowland.

ғHe really just told us basically what (Homeland) Secretary (Tom) Ridge had told the public the day before and yesterday as well, Fiore said.

ԓHe said they raised the threat level because of the increase in sources they consider credible—they dont really have any specifics for us.Ҕ

The police official said the governor recounted some of the actions the state was taking such as putting troopers on the trains, opening the weigh stations, and beefing up security at the Millstone nuclear power plant, at some of the bridges, and at the airports. On a local level, theyӒre really not making any recommendations to us, Fiore said. ԓIf we do have any critical sites, they are recommending that we step up patrols at them. We donӒt really have anything identified here other than some of the infrastructure such as the trains, the bridge over the Saugatuck River, the chemicals at the sewage treatment plant, things of that nature, and those have all been addressed. Fiore said he is in frequent contact with McCarthy on the increased security measures.

ԓHe and I have been talking as recently as this morning, so we are staying in touch and if there is anything that needs to be done, we will address it at that time, he said. Westport police had already increased patrols of the downtown area and elsewhere before the security alert because of the holiday season and increased traffic. McCarthy said the townԒs emergency management team, made up of all town department heads, has been contacted and we will be fully operational should the need arise.Ӕ He told WestportNow that those members who might not be immediately available due to the holidays have designated others in their departments who would be. Deputy Chief Al Fiore, Diane Farrell, and I had a conference call this morning to insure that any information received is coordinated between the emergency services departments and the First Selectwoman,Ӕ McCarthy said. He said no changes in Fire Department staffing are anticipated at this time. The Fairfield County Hazmat Team is operating under normal protocols.Ӕ McCarthy said. Our mobilization plan is designed to have the team operational with up to 65 Hazmat Technicians with one hour of notification.Ӕ

Is Alfred Fiore any relation to Alfred Fiore that came over from Naples, Italy in late 1800s?  My grandfather and his family lived in Chicago.  He had three children-Ralph, Sam, Ed, and Margaret (my mother).  I have been trying to find ancesters and it is hard unless you have a lot of money to spend on an investigator.  Thank you.
