UPDATE Westport’s Team SNAP, a group of five Coleytown Middle School students privately organized and funded, has won a “golden ticket” to the state robotics finals on Dec. 7. One of two “official” Westport middle school teams also advanced in a competition Saturday (see WestportNow Nov. 24, 2013). Team SNAP, which participates in FIRST LEGO League (FLL), a worldwide robotics and technology program, on Saturday won the second place Championship Award at Circus Robotix in Shelton. The award goes to the team which performs best in all of the categories, including robot design, research project, and FIRST Core Values, which include teamwork, cooperation, and “gracious professionalism.” They also won the Robot Performance Award with their robot achieving the highest score of the day. As part of its efforts, Team SNAP developed and published an app, Survival Necessities and Preparation, (available on iTunes) to help people to be prepared for natural disasters. To date, 40 percent of the downloads for their app have been from outside the United States, including three from the Philippines.
