The fire broke out at 11:43 a.m. at the Wilton Crest complex on River Road. It was declared under control more than an hour later.

Wilton Fire Chief Paul Milositz said 15 units in the 109-unit complex were destroyed or heavily damaged. An hour into the blaze, all firefighters were ordered out of the complex because of the danger of collapse.

In addition to Westport, Wilton called in mutual aid from New Canaan, Norwalk,  Ridgefield, Weston, and Georgetown.

Two firefighters were injured fighting the blaze, but the Wilton Fire department said the injuries were not serious.

The last Westport unit left the scene at 3:22 p.m.
