Westport Filmmaker, Playwright Win Awards

A Westport filmmaker was one of four recipients statewide to be awarded the 2009 Artist Fellowship in Film/Video by the Connecticut Commission for Culture and Tourism. Lisa Seidenberg was the only filmmaker in Fairfield County to win the award. Image

There were a total of 36 awards made this year in the categories of poetry, choreography, fiction, playwriting and music composition. A playwriting award was given to David Meth, also a Westport resident.

Seidenberg recently made “The Road Taken…The Merritt Parkway,” a 35-minute film which includes archival material and anecdotes about the scenic and historic roadway. It features an appearance by Henry Merritt, a relative of Congressman Schuyler Merritt for whom the parkway is named, and the photographic work of Nate Gibbons, also a Westport resident.

Award amounts are either $5,000 or $2,500 and support the continuing artistic development of the grantee and the creation of new work. The single review criterion, according to the commission’s guidelines, as listed on its Web site, is “artistic merit.”

Seidenberg’s Merritt Parkway documentary will be screened at the North Branch Bridgeport Library on March 30 at 6:30 p.m. and the Westport Public Library on April 20 at 7:30 p.m. It has already had showings at the Avon Theater in Stamford, the Westport Historical Society, the Hartford Film Festival, and the Bridgeport Main Library. Additional information can be found on the filmmaker’s Web site.

Previous work by the filmmaker includes a feature, “Pledge of Allegiance Blues.” She is currently developing new projects which revisit history, including one on the 1939 World’s Fair.
