Westport closed Compo Beach and Burying Hill Beach to swimming today after elevated bacteria counts were found at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.
The beaches will remain closed to swimmers until at least Thursday.
Judy Nelson, director of the Westport-Weston Health District, told WestportNow that heavy rains had contributed to a problem at the Bridgeport sewage plant and increased runoff all along Long Island Sound.
Sherwood Island did a test and the (bacteria) count was off the wall,Ӕ said Nelson. They closed and so did Fairfield. I usually am very conservative in these matters and thought closing Westport seemed the wise thing to do.Ӕ
Westport will conduct its own test Wednesday morning and the waters will remain closed to swimming at least until the results are reported back Thursday, Nelson said.
While swimming will not be allowed, the beaches will remain open to visitors, she said.
