Update from Planning and Zoning Commission

Catherine Walsh, chair of the Westport Planning and Zoning Commission, today issued the following update on the commission’s work:

Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD)

At the May 4 meeting it was announced, by Chair Cathy Walsh that the first draft of the Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD) would be made available on the town website. Comments from the public are invited,

The commission asks that all comments be specific and applicable pages be referenced. Please email Mary Young, the P&Z director, at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and include POCD in the subject line. The commission will review in advance of the May 11 work session and discuss with the consultant.

There will be more opportunities for public input over the next few months.

Affordable Housing

The commission has decided to take another look at affordable housing in Westport and has been busy in subcommittee for a few months. Danielle Dobin is chairing the effort with Chip Stephens and Michael Cammeyer.

The first tangible result of the subcommittee is the updating of the reporting structure of affordable units. The developers/owners of private projects are required to report to the town on an annual basis. The subcommittee will also be doing an educational outreach to the community on affordable housing.

Chip Stephens updated the commission on the joint subcommittee of the P&Z and the Zoning Board of Appeals (ZBA)  looking at rezoning nonconforming properties (mostly in the Compo Beach area and other B zones). By making these lots conforming, we hope to eliminate the need for most variances.

Ooen Space-Lillian Wadsworth Arboretum

Commissioner Al Gratrix has been working with Tree Warden Bruce Lindsay and the Tree Board on the Lillian Wadsword Arboretum. The land has been cleared, new plantings are abundant and new paths are connecting with Earthplace.  Go, enjoy, volunteer to be a part of this effort.
