UPDATE An accident involving a jackknifed tractor-trailer and five other cars early today on the I-95 bridge over the Saugatuck River southbound caused multiple injuries and shut down the roadway, fire officials said.
The accident occurred at about 1:25 a.m. and the roadway was reopened about 90 minutes later.
Ten patients were transported to Norwalk Hospital for treatment with non-life threatening injuries and another nine involved in the accident refused medical treatment, said Westport Fire Assistant Chief John Plofkin, Jr.
He said arriving firefighters found a jackknifed tractor-trailer blocking the high speed and center lanes with five other motor vehicles involved.
One vehicle was located in the breakdown lane on top of the guardrail, another vehicle was partially located under the trailer, while a third was pinned against the jersey barrier by the tractor’s cab, Plofkin said.
Two other vehicles were located just south of the tractor-trailer and all vehicles had moderate to heavy vehicle damage, he said.
