Today’s WestportNow teardown is at 9 Half Mile Common off of Cross Highway. A demolition permit has been submitted for the 1954 home which sold Jan. 18 for $750,000. Because it is more than 50 years old, the application must be heard by the Historic District Commission, which has put it on its Feb. 8 agenda. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com

It is absurd that hastily and poorly designed 1950’s tract housing such as this is even being considered as “historic”. Houses such as this don’t have “good bones”, charm, or other attributes that should shelter it from a wrecking ball. The Town and the Historic District Commission must begin using common sense and not force homeowners to spend extra money and time to plead their case to tear down tired, outdated 1950’s-style homes that don’t meet today’s lifestyle demands. Besides there already are similar homes on this street that have been torn down, without having to go before the Historic Commission. Is that fair?? And why should homes on Half Mile be stuck in a time warp, while tony Woody Lane, across the street, which did not look so different from Half Mile a few years ago, was allowed its Extreme Makeover?
Not to say that the house shouldn’t be torn down but don’t you think Barbara R is missing the point? There have to be some standards and processes in place by which these once quaint little towns review and decide which buildings to tear down and which to save. So a half century should have some historical value in the big picture don’t you think? No doubt they should be able to review and give this one the tear down seal quite quickly but some one has to give the yay or nay not just anyone on the street. And this has nothing to do with the fact that I grew up in Westport and in fact in this very house. I would hate to see a REAL historical 1954 house torn down because there was no process in place.
